Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the Wii Remote

This video
opens up a display possibility I had not even thought of. When I read the associated story before watching the video, I didn't even understand the concept. I thought the only way VR would work is by attaching a display to your face. How could it possibly apply to a stationary big TV in your room? The idea is to turn it into a virtual window, and I'd love to see games supporting it. There's a bit of unmentioned trickery here, though. The display itself is not 3D because it doesn't involve projecting a different image into each eye. While this demonstration looks way impressive from the perspective of a camcorder, the reality from a 2-eyed user's perspective won't be so dramatic, I don't think. Stereoscopy would need to go along with the rest of the application.

that is amazing! someone at id/valve/epic needs to hire this guy and get a non-jury rigged bit of hardware together and on the market. playing proper fps games like this would give so much more control and immersion.

I have to confess I wasn't expecting that much going in, but that was pretty damned cool. If you could really use that in a meaningful way and put some money behind it... hell. That could be awesome and a half.

That was really cool, hopefully a developer is smart enough to look more into it.

Sweet! It's just like the VR sensors and visors they had at the technology exhibition a few years back here in the U.A.E.! It's really trippy stuff and it would be amazing to see it fully functional for the average consumers!

Update at Joystiq.
Johnny Lee's brainstorms wow the TED crowd. Apparently, Spielberg's upcoming Wii puzzle game is going to feature the head tracking as an easter egg.

Cool stuff, it sounds like the idea is has raised a few heads. I wonder if we will see any kind of meaningful commercial product anytime soon.
