The company has sold 16 million Radeon HD 5000 series in the last three quarters.

This means that they have shipped 16 million DirectX 11 parts and that Nvidia probably managed only a few hundred thousand. So judging by number cards sold, ATI has won this round by a mile.

16 million desktop DX11 GPUs. Who the hell is buying these? My 8800GTX is still running most games maxed at 1080p.

I'm with you on that, except I have a 8800 GTS 320 MB.  I am not upgrading my videocard until the next round of consoles forces a change.

Yeah, my 8800 is still running things like a champ. No real need for anything faster right now.

Scott, I know you mentioned you feel out of it with gaming. Do you have a PS3?

If not, I'd suggest you get a PS3 slim (especially if you have an HDTV). It just feels more right than the 360.

Also, if anyone needs to upgrade, ATi is planning a release of the 6xxx series cards in two months. The 5xxx prices apparently won't budge an inch till then.

Nah, I'm not a consoler.  The last console game I got was GTAIV.

Maybe AMD and ATI bought them back in bulk to make their sales look even better than they should be? :P

Actually, I think after the Fermi disaster, many wanting a newer DX card might be looking at ATI card instead.

That's just it.  This gen, ATi seems like the clear choice.  Cheaper and better.

Fuck ATi, I'm never buying a card from them again, Ive had 2 ATi cards that just have been total shit, nvidia's cards have never given me problems, they even have better drivers.

They've had their downs for sure, but on the whole I've been much happier with their cards as far as price/performance ratio, and they've gotten better about drivers and stuff.  I still prefer them to nvidia.

I've been firmly in Nvidia's camp myself, for years.  But they blew it recently with bad hardware, at the same time ATi had (and still has) solid offerings for cheap.  Personally, I hope Nvidia bounces back quickly.  I agree they have the better support.  But until then, if I have to get a video card, I'll have to go the ATi route.

I've been more on the side of ATi through the years until 2007 when I decided to go with Nvidia (8800 GTS 320MB). That card is still amazing. When I got my new Asus I decided to switch back to ATi since the Radeon HD 5870 was too tempting of an offer.

My old Radeon X1650 is still running in my old Shuttle XPC, while it's outdated for games it's amazing for all other media e.g. video rendering, capture, encoding/decoding, visual plugins in media players, all the basic stuff and, of course, XBMC as my media management suite.
