Title: Juneteenth is the worst name for a holiday
Post by: idolminds on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, 08:29:15 PM
Whoever came up with it should be shot. They must have held a contest to create the dumbest, most annoying name for the holiday.

Its almost as bad as "tweens"...

Heh, yeah, it's not a terribly compelling title.  I wonder if that's why it isn't a very popular holiday.

Juneteenth is June 19th, the day that the abolition of slavery was announced.  Its also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day which sound a lot better.  It is celebrated here in Texas heavily because it is where it originated, but I think it is celebrated in other states too.

I just call it my Brother's Birthday coz it's my brother's birthday.

Freedom Day is cool hehe Kind of ironic, coz the day my brother born was a day of peace for my mom :P My bro was a tough one when my mom was pregnant with him ;D

They celebrate it here as well, but mostly festivals and stuff.  You don't tend to hear actual individuals talking about it so much or whatever.  Usually there are just places with music and food and crap around the area you can go to.  Though frankly I think it's one of those holidays that sort of lost whatever meaning it once had.  Well, I guess that's probably most of them, but... yeah.  Sort of sad.

I've heard of Emancipation Day before but never Juneteenth. I agree, horrible name.

Though frankly I think it's one of those holidays that sort of lost whatever meaning it once had.

How so? I've never celebrated the day that I know of, so it never held any meaning outside of what it stands for, for me.
