It's coming. Whether this particular deal happens or not it seems more and more likely that a free and open internet will eventually be part of the history books.

Scary stuff... I honestly can't think of what solution there is. I mean Internet service providing is scary business. But there won't be a company more godlike than the one that controls the internet.

We already have something where we pay for higher tiers of service. It's called cable, you motherfucking asshats, and it isn't fucking cheap.

Scroll down to the updates. (http://gizmodo.com/5605310/google-just-killed-net-neutrality)
The companies are saying the story isn't true. But who knows.

I don't think truely tiered service for the internet will ever really take off...or at least not in the near future. With other services, tiering came into play by adding additional services on top of the base service that people were accustomed to. Dissolving net neutrality is pretty much the exact opposite. Also, the providers must know that the people who would potentially find use for the premium services they provide (people like us as opposed to people like my parents) are inherently opposed to such a system AND the ones most likely to find a way around it.
I can't really see it being all that lucrative once they actually assessed the logistics of implimenting such a system.
