Doom 64 on PC (Doom 64 EX)
« on: Thursday, May 21, 2009, 04:36:57 PM »
update 5/14/16: Found this while looking to see if we had a thread for Doom 2016. In this thread I was talking about Doom 64 Absolution, which was a total conversion for Doomsday. He basically remade he game. The creator has long since released Doom 64 EX, which actually uses the original Doom 64 data, and requires an N64 ROM file. You can get it here: https://doom64ex.wordpress.com/downloads/ but you'll need to place a Doom64 rom file in the folder and run Wadgen.exe to get it to create the data files needed to run.

Original post:
I remembered this when reading Cobra's thread about Doom+Heretic+Hexen flash. This may be old news, but someone ported Doom 64 (more like recreated I think) on the Doomsday engine. I used to own Doom 64, and so far this seems like an excellent recreation.

I'm sure there's a certain amount of hate for Doom 64, since it wasn't created by id (I don't think), it was a console exclusive, and it didn't add all that much to the game series despite the progress of FPS at the time. However, it's a slightly prettier version of Doom with different levels. Plus it's got a double bladed chainsaw!

Actually, I think Doom 64 is kind of cool.  It's an interesting spin on the usual game.  I remember there being a version of it you could download and play using Doomsday from quite a while ago, but I'm not sure if it was complete or not.  I actually had a surprising amount of fun with it.  It was pretty cool.

Dude thanks so much for posting this.  One of the biggest negatives about Doom 64 was that it was so damn dark it was almost impossible to see.  This remedies that.

Very cool man, thanks

I've played both the original and the Doomsday PC version.  It's a good Doom variant.  I really liked it.

I remember wanting Doom 64 way back when.  But when it came out it seemed really behind the times in comparison to what else was out there.

Doom 64 is one of those games that yeah, probably didn't age that well, probably was a little behind the times, but was enjoyable to me nonetheless.

Probably a little nostalgia mixed in too.

I really like how different it looks.  That's what's really striking for someone who's been playing the same Doom stuff for a billion years.  Plus the level design was actually quite good, so it holds up to id's stuff pretty well for the most part.

Is there any advantage to playing it that way?

Playing EX over Absolution? It'll be more accurate to the original I think.

Just was curious if the differences were particularly substantial or not. I did play a bit of the actual Doom 64 at one point, but not nearly enough to know for sure.

Yeah I haven't played Doom 64 in years so if there are inaccuracies I wouldn't spot them. It's also been quite a while since got rid of my Absolution install and setup EX, so I don't recall any differences between those either.

Here's Digital Foundry and Eurogamer, looking at the new re-release of DOOM 64 (PC, Switch, X1, PS4), enhanced and revived by Nightdive:

I purchased and devoured it over the course of a week.  The lost levels are excellent.

I do want to give this a go. I played some Absolution at some point, but with all the games on sale on Switch I grabbed it there too because why not?
