OLPC

I was following this for a while, and just checked back up on it.  I like the look of the prototype they have there.  Pretty awesome stuff.

In third world countries warlords ride into villages and steal all the supplies, medicines, and food donated by Red Cross and other such organizations.  Why would this laptop be exempt?

They'll probably collect them and network them to make a supercomputer for sending out Nigerian scam e-mail spam.

I thought about the same thing.  Corruption is so bad that some powerful asshole will end up hoarding most of those, and reselling them at a good-enough profit to buy more weapons.

I read about this in the NYT awhile ago, very interesting concept. They are supposed to be a supplement to education, not the education in itself, so some sort of educational system will most likely be necessary. As for some asshole hoarding them, countries that have gorilla organizations and chaos inside of the country most likely don't have enough money to buy the laptops to begin with.
