I think he approached his public appearance the wrong way. He should have adopted the philosophy of a performance artist, i.e. presented the persona that made him popular. He should have gone about it like Sacha Cohen did with Borat, or Andy Kaufman or even George Carlin in a concert or whatever. He should have come to the mic with grunts and insults and maybe kicked a few children
Instead he is behaving like the person behind the personality and that is pretty sad. For a guy who prided himself on his intelligence, he bumbled and stuttered a lot as he spoke. He also used words such as "like", "you know" and "I mean" a lot.
I am not saying that isn't what he is and that there is anything wrong with that. I just think he shatters his image, and should have given his approach some thought. I am not surprised that is what he is like in real life, and was expecting it. But he really dropped the ball. He should have come out like George Carlin or at least tried to maintain the persona that made him popular.

He looks a bit nervous almost. When some guy yelled "Take your hat off" he should have barked something back at him. Instead he looked almost submissive. His stories are pretty funny, but it is the letters to him that were funny, and not him. There are moments when he let's the Maddox persona out, but I think it was a miscalculation.
