I doubt this would work.

Fines for failed marriages

Poland is planning to fine people who get divorced in a bid to cut the spiralling number of failed marriages.

The ruling PiS party unveiled the plan after it was revealed a third of Polish marriages now end in divorce.

The fines, set depending how well off spouses are, could soar into hundreds of thousands of pounds for wealthier Poles.

Divorce in Poland currently cost around £100 in court fees, a figure ruling MPs feel is much too cheap.

According to Andrzej Symanski, a PiS party MP: "It costs the same to divorce as a good pair of shoes."

MPs now want to raise divorce fees, making the price dependent on the spouses' earnings and property.

University sociologist Dr. Krzystof Lecki accused the state of looking to cash in on the divorce trend and added it would not stop people separating.

He said: "If adults want to get divorced, they will, whatever the costs are. It's more likely to stop people marrying in the first place than anything else."

I think this would have the wrong effect. People would just not gamble with marriage.

People don't think about that shit when they go to get married.  Like here in the U.S.  The divorce rate here is really high and it costs a lot of money even well after the marriage over, but people still get married anyway.

There was this one girl I used to work with I had a crush on.  She ended up meeting some guy and getting engaged after 6 months.  In less than a year, they were married.  6 months after that, they were divorced.  Gee, I didn't see that one coming.

just shows how many people marry for the wrong reasons, or shall I say, people who don't know the meaning of marriage?

gold.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of marriage at all, but people don't consider financial hardship from getting a divorce before getting married.  Dumb idea.

At best you have people who split up and stay technically married because they can't afford a divorce.

You're not a fan of marriage?  I find this statement perplexing.

But yeah, I think the whole thing is lame.  What it comes down to is you can't stop stupid people from being stupid, and most people are idiots.

I have no problem with the idea of spending the rest of your life with someone you love, but I just don't see the point in the institution.  I suppose marriage being a religious institution conflicts with my aethiesm, and the fact that every marriage I have ever been exposed to ended in disaster doesn't exactly help... but I just dont see the point.

To me it's mainly about showing your level of commitment to your significant other, and to the rest of the world. It's nice knowing that somebody has chosen to be with you through thick and thin, for the rest of your life. Though I guess a lot of people don't see it that way anymore. The religious aspect is only an aspect if you make it one.

Yeah, I mean... it's about commitment.  If I wasn't married to Julia, I guarantee you I wouldn't have the constitution for dealing with her illness and the problems it's caused us.  Marriage helps me to remember what's important.  That's what it is at its heart... a reminder that your own pleasure and ease is not the highest goal.  Loving someone and giving of yourself even when you have nothing left within you *is*.
