That iPhone doohicky looks pretty neat....
« on: Friday, April 13, 2007, 05:10:32 PM »
As much as I hate apple. I do like my iPod, and the iPhone looks like it might be a neat little gadget...

Any word on how much it's going to go for?

$500 with a 2 year contract I believe?

It's a nifty gadget, but in terms of practicality and stuff, I think it's a terrible idea.  Naturally Apple fanboys are drooling over it, but the phone is too damn big and I don't like the fact that the screen is so big.

It looks pretty awesome but I find the pricing odd. $500 for a 4GB and another $100 for the 8GB... that doesn't make sense.

Meh. I use my phone to call people. No way I'd throw 500 bucks so that my phone looks cool / has flashy graphics on it.

Probably the main thing I like about it is the full html web browser, it doesnt have that shitty condensed html that are on cell phones now. Browsing the web with that anywhere would be pretty cool. But its not gonna replace my computer so it wouldnt be worth it for me.

I was really really close to getting a Q.  It's gonna be too much a month for me though.  Can anyone with Verizon make a strong recommendation for a phone?

A lot of people don't care for all these fancy cell phones.  I mean, they're all nice to have features but at the end of the day, the primary use of a cell phone is for making calls?

Watching movies?  Why the fuck would I watch a movie on a 2" screen at a low bitrate that kills my phone's battery?

Listen to music?  This is plausible and reasonable.  I use my k790a with a 1GB card for music listening since most of the time I don't feel like carrying an extra device (re: mp3 player) with me.  However, a long road trip or if I travel, I'd need to bring an mp3 player with me anyway.

Camera; really hit and miss.  I mean, I've got a 3.2 MP camera on my cell phone and it takes pretty shitty pictures, or good pictures, depending on how you look at it.  On one hand, it takes good pictures for a cell phone, on the other hand, compared to real digital cameras, it blows.  The lens is crappy, the camera is slow, and the picture quality is mediocre most of the time.  I hear there are some half decent phone cameras though but I'd rather use a real digital camera instead.

Web browsing; again this is a nice to have feature, but I don't see it as being a necessity.  Browsing rates on a phone is expensive.

Games; this is a cool feature, but it's hard finding good cell phone games sometimes, unless you have 'sources'.

Email is a really good feature and is really handy for some people, but Blackberry has nailed the email in a phone thing on the mark.

etc etc.

I really only use my phone for just its phone capabilities, and I occasionally use it for mp3 playing, and for some light gaming when I'm in a boring class or something like that.  Only problem is that I usually have my laptop with me 90% of the time when I'm on the go, so I'd rather be using my laptop instead.

I don't think thats the only thing a cellphone does.

But that's the only thing I use it for. Ippi summed up my thoughts well. Never have I been talking on my cell phone and had any desire to start browsing the web or taking pictures or any of the other things that this Iphone comes with. I have a camera on my current cellphone but that was unavoidable- all cellphones have one now. Anyways, It's cool and all, I just couldn't see myself shelling out that sort of cash for it.

Yea while my k800i doesn't take the best pics in darker settings, it takes decent ones in good light. And I've taken some brilliant pictures thanks to the cellphone providing good opportunity. I just can't carry a digital camera around.

My point is that most people don't buy a phone to show off, though I am sure some do.

Anyway the best picture I've taken because of a camera was when I was visiting someone at an office building. One of the offices was owned by a Mr.Butt (which is a common name in Pakistan) and he owned a mango company. So naturally he named his company Butt Mangoes.

But I do agree that cellphones are a jack of all trades device. I have to admit I was immensely disappointed with my K800i's picture taking ability initially. It is decent only in sunlight.

I was laughing when I took this, and the manager of this office was watching from the window thinking I was some crazy guy.

edit:

Also I saw Keebler inside trying to buy actual butt mangoes. Will he ever learn?

Deja vu.  My cell does pictures (good only in bright light), MP3s, video, net browsing, games even, if I cared.  But for amost all of this, I don't.  I encoded some videos when it was a new toy, took some pictures, loaded up some music.  But after the novelty wore off, all I still care about is, don't get too shocked now, talking on the phone!  And it cost one tenth of what that iPhone goes for too.  Oh, OK, I bought a memory card and USB cable/earbuds kit for it.  Make it 1/5th the cost.

Hm,  I must be different from you guys.
I use my mobile phone camera all the time. Same with the MP3 player... why carry around an iPod and a phone when the phone alone works fine. And the web browsing saves my ass everytime I'm on vacation: no need to find an Internet cafe to check news, email, or sports scores.

That said, although the iPhone looks sleek as hell, I'm not buying one until they release a 3G, unlocked model.

I got my Pearl for free with a 2yr contract.

The web browsing is a pain, but I've used Google Maps on it a bunch and Gmail.  I also have Google Talk on it.  It's pretty nice.

When I was working at the print shop, I used my Dell Axim (PDA) as an MP3 player.  I imagine that if I was still there, I'd be using the phone instead.  You're right, why carry multiple gadgets?  I do take pictures with it on occasion, when something comes up unexpectedly (and so I don't have my camera).  I've entertained my little girl on a long car ride with a claymation video.  So yeah, I'm not saying these capabilities are worthless.  More like not the real reason to own a phone, much less pay half a grand for one.

Yeah, there is no way I'm paying $500 for that thing. It looks really sweet, with the navigation and interface, but it's not $500 worth of sweet.
