Microsoft is a sore loser.
« on: Monday, April 16, 2007, 09:50:35 AM »
As reported by the NY times. Worth a read.

You know what? I hate all the big fuckers. Apple, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Sierra, eBay etc. All these big companies suck because they do typical big company bullshit stuff. The sad thing is they were all at some point fan boy favorites when they were young. Microsoft was well loved back in the day, Electronic Arts were gods in their early days and Sierra was my favorite development team when people like Roberta Williams were creating titles like King's Quest.

Currently they are all monsters trying their best and hardest to rape you and shove as much crap down your throat as possible. They are like the lawyers who will try to bill you for as many things as possible, and sneak more in the fine print.

When someone picks on Google, I automatically hate them even more. We've watched Google grow up from a tiny search engine to a massive business that still has plenty of good will. I  frankly still like Google. Most of their software is good, isn't bloated and their search engine kicks all sorts of ass. Plus they turned the e-mail business on its head by providing massive accounts. I love them for that.

I recommend everyone read that article, but it seems that both Microsoft and Google were bidding for a company called Double Click. Microsoft lost, so they thought it prudent to file an antitrust suit. It seems their attitude is,"If we can't have it, no one can.... Muhahaha." (Minus the muhahaha)

Wow this is ridiculous.  Microsoft is making a judgment about anti-competitive behavior?  Isn't that ironic.

Honestly, this completely dumbfounds me.  Google dominates the online advertising business, but there is still plenty of competition through companies like Yahoo! and other Doubleclick-like businesses.  Oh and Microsoft too.

Yeah, but anti-trust laws aren't about a complete lack of competition in a market, they're about tactics and leverage that a dominent player may use.  Is it a form of intigration or is it blatent illegal anti-competitive practices? It's a very fine line.   Just because it's MS voicing conern shouldn't automatically discredit the claim.  This isn't the first time in the last few months people have been wary of google's future motives in the advertising industry.

But like you said yourself Pug, all those other guys had good reputations when they started out....and then they got big and started making decisions which alienated people.  I don't know why you'd think google was any different.  They stopped being 'a massive business that still has plenty of good will' at their IPO.  Then they became a corporation which has plenty of good will...as long as it doesn't offend the earning potential of their shareholders.  Do you really think 'Do No Evil' hasn't devolved from being a mission statement to a corporate slogan?

All big companies suck for the simple reason that nobody gives a shit about the consumer anymore.  They only care about the bottom line.  Profit margins are all that matter, and fuck if you're satisfied or not.  As long as you paid, nobody cares.  And honestly, I'm pretty wary of Google.  They've stretched their tentacles so far and wide it isn't even funny, and given that ALL BIG BUSINESS turns evil, I really see this turning out very badly.  They're going to get huge and corrupt just like the rest of them, and all it's going to become is stamping more derivative products that don't need to exist with their brand.  And they'll win just because of name recognition even though there are far, far better pieces of software out there that predate them (sort of like Apple and the iPod).

God, you had to get me started.  Even ultra-conservative capitalism calls for the government to have four functions.  The first three deal with establishing a climate conducive to stable business.  The fourth is breaking up monopolies.  Why the hell has this crucial requirement been abandoned?  All I can think of is corruption not in business, because it is the essence of any company to kill the competition by any means that stand up to legal challenges, but in government.  Microsoft should have been split into at least three different companies years ago.  Yet here they are today, alarmed that another huge monster may take over enough of the market to engage in monopolistic practices with as much impunity as they do.  Awesome.

Yup pretty naive of me to suggest Google are above any these shenanigans, but despite spreading the tentacles they have been clean so far. Of course who knows what the future holds.

Quote from: TFA
Google tracks the interests and preferences among the millions of people who use its search engine. DoubleClick is the leader among companies that specialize in placing, or “serving,” the graphical and video ads that appear on Web sites. Ad-serving networks like DoubleClick place tiny programs on personal computers, called cookies, that monitor where an individual user goes online.
Eh?
