Stuff and things!
« on: Monday, April 23, 2007, 11:48:27 AM »
Hooray for cheapness! I bought some games and stuff today.

Thrift store had Quake 1 in mint condition for $2. I already have it obviously, but its nice to have a spare. Or if someone here doesnt happen to have it I can mail it out. I also picked up some music CD with music inspired by Tribes 2. How odd, yet cool. And then I found Lost in Translation DVD for $5.

Target has a ton of clearance stuff for PC games. I got Warhammer Mark of Chaos for $12 and Call of Duty box set (CoD and UO) for $20. They had more stuff, most of it $13: Diablo 2, D2: Lord of Destruction (individually, the set isnt on sale), Starcraft battle chest, GTA:SA, Red Orchestra...bunch of things. Of course I either already had them or wasnt interested in them, just posting in case anyone wants to check their Targets.

How did the final release versions of Red Orchestra pan out.  I tried it out a few times when it was in early beta, but it seemed kind of boring.

I think Red Orchestra turned out quite well. I'd put it up there with other online shooters. The realism bent is nice, and kills feel quite satisfying. A couple stick out in my mind. I was on this snowy map with a bridge, hiding behind a wall. I popped up and looked over the frozen river, saw a lone enemy running across. I aimed (iron sights) at the dude and popped off a round, and watched his body fall. He was quite a distance away and theres no zoom with the IS. Really felt cool. Or this other time a MG was firing into this alley near our spawn. I rushed into a building and was able to get above him and shoot him from the window. Very sweet.

So if you like realism, its a good bet. I like the slight blurring of your vision when bullets wizz past your head. Puts you in the moment.

Mark of Chaos? Yeah, thats recent.

Oh yeah, and a milestone: I saw a Wii for sale. First time ever.

I would totally take that Quake 1.  I actually lost mine a while back.  Made me pretty sad.  I still have no clue what happened to it.  I take such good care of my games, I don't know how it managed to disappear.

No need for a new thread or anything.

I'm playing Call of Duty, and having mixed feelings about it. It has its moments, like the large battles going on around you but I'm not enjoying myself as much as I thought.

One thing is theres quite a lot of "trial and error" stuff. Things get hectic and all of a sudden you're dead because in the chaos you didn't notice that tank. This stuff seems to happen more often than I'd care for. Perfect example is I'm in the back of this stolen truck and have to stop our attackers who chase us in other vehicles. The NPC in the back with me hands me rocket launchers out of the crates. So I'm grabbing them and blowing up these cars and...BOOM, I'm dead. A truck showed up in front of us and I didn't notice, so we died. This happened like 5 times in the mission. Eventually you learn the pattern of which vehicles to hit and the ones to ignore till the really dangerous ones are taken care of.

The other thing is so far the levels don't have a lot of closure. One mission sends me into this dam to sabotage to some planes can fly in and destroy it. Of course they send me in alone (which sucks because fighting with other dudes is fun). I go across the top of the dam and blow up the AA guns and a few germans, fight my way all the way down to ground level where I plant explosives on the generator in case the plane cant make its run and destroy the last AA turret. Now I have to backtrack and fight all the way back up to the top of the dam to escape. I get in the back of the truck and we drive off (into the driving mission I explained earlier).

Maybe it comes after we steal the plane (2 missions later), but after all that shit let me at least watch the dam explode.

Like I said it has its moments but it is so heavily scripted it hurts and the level endings don't help you feel like you've accomplished anything.

I'll try keep going but they are making it tough.
