Wii and DS success bad for industry?
« on: Friday, April 27, 2007, 09:55:17 AM »
According to this moron.

Quote
Todd Mitchell’s most recent note to investors regarding Nintendo outlined how the “DS and the Wii are taking the videogame industry by storm,” creating record income for Nintendo and expanding the market well beyond the hardcore gamer.

But Mitchell claims the strides made by Nintendo’s platforms are actually detrimental to the industry in the long run.

“Nintendo has not only increased the size of the market, but it has also re-segmented it in its own favor, in our view,” Mitchell wrote. “Nintendo is dominating software sales on its popular hardware platforms, leaving the publishers with a smaller slice of an only somewhat incrementally larger pie.”

He continued, “Moreover, we feel that the likely shorter product cycles of Nintendo's platforms puts the publishers in a permanent catch-up mode. We think the upcoming releases of Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption will highlight this phenomena [sic] this holiday season.”

What Mitchell alludes to is the tendency for Nintendo-published titles to overrun the top end of sales charts on Nintendo platforms, leaving third party publishers out of luck sales-wise.

While DS software sales charts are currently dominated by Nintendo titles such as Brain Age, Nintendogs, Pokemon, Mario Kart and the like, third parties such as Ubisoft and Sega have found notable success on the Wii in these early months after the console's launch.
Maybe if publishers would stop releasing shitty ports and licensed games on Nintendo platforms they'd get better sales. Nintendo games sell well on Nintendo platforms because they are great games. When the rest of the games are crappy, of course no one will buy them.

Even if this was a real issue, I dont see how its any worse than EA pushing out yearly, buggy sequels to every game they make.

I feel stupider for reading that. What an idiot.

Yes, because this hasn't always been the case with Nintendo. This alarming trend has just begun with the Wii and DS. Yes. Also the last part of that sentence makes no sense. In fact, this guy is literally bashing Nintendo for increasing the size of the video game market....

Well, this isn't good for consumers -- that Nintendo's console themselves don't last as long as say an XBox or a PS2, longevity-wise.

What do you expect, though? Their hardware's not too powerful, anyways.

Hmmm....when is the next Nintendo console slated for...?

Very true.

Hmmm....what could be worse...?
Imagine the day EA made their own console, though..... *shutters*

Well, he has a point in that 3rd parties are in a high-risk market on a Nintendo console.  Been that way since the N64.

But like idol said, if the 3rd party games were anywhere near as awesome as the 1st party games, people would buy them.  I mean Factor 5 had some pretty good success with Nintendo because it made quality games.

Yeah, this guy is an idiot.  He says nothing of any relevance.  He's only stating obvious things and attempting to put some kind of negative spin on them.  Shitty games don't sell well, barring Halo, so just shut up and go enjoy Nintendo's quality.
