That was such a poorly worded article..

So the basic one is cheaper, but the premium or whatever one is still full price?

Thats pretty much what I got out of it as well. $100 off the price of the basic PS3. This only applies to japan...the rest of the worlds PS3 prices havent changed.

I like how they talk about this in the article like its to combat the Xbox 360. MS could give the 360 away for free in japan and still have trouble moving units. Sony saw the Wii price was $300 ($515 vs $215) cheaper than the cheapest PS3 in Japan and knew the japanese market would jump at it. This move was all about the Wii.

There's been some significant inflation since last console launch, but I still think $300 is the cutoff point between early-adopter and mass market for consoles.  If I'm to be proven wrong, I guess the PS3 may be the console to do it.  But I don't think so.
