Anyone ever get a DS flash cart?
« on: Tuesday, June 19, 2007, 11:16:31 PM »
I've been looking into getting one. Not going to lie...I cant afford most of the DS games I want and it would be nice to be able to play them anyway...at least until the price drops or I can get cheaper used copies. Plus, some games are impossible to find (Electroplankton and Advance Wars DS come to mind). Add in the homebrew scene (I found a port of Dungeon Crawl...so awesome), and it seems like the $40 investment wouldn't be a bad idea.

So, anyone use one? I hear the "R4DS" is the best one to get right now.

I still don't even have a DS.  Though I think I'll be getting one soon so Julia and I can play through Children of Mana together.  But yeah, I might be interested in a flash cart if I had one.  Mostly just to fiddle with stuff, not to get games.  The PSP rules the scene where most of the homebrewy stuff goes, but I just love to fiddle with anything I get.

I would really like one for homebrew stuff. It's a consideration.

I take it they're in a better state now than a couple of years ago?  I got a GBA flash cart, and it works exactly as it should.  But last I heard, DS carts still had a ways to go, because of the system's protections.

Yeah, from the reviews I've read the DS stuff is easy as hell now. The R4DS fits into the regular DS cart slot. You put a MicroSD card in it to store stuff. All you have to do is format it correctly and copy some system files (DS system files) over to it and its ready to go. To put new stuff on it all you have to do is use a MicroSD card reader (one comes with the R4) and just drag and drop the stuff.

Thats the slot 1 stuff. Theres also slot 2 (GBA slot) things. Those are a little trickier because you still need something in slot 1 to get it to boot. The advantage of a slot 2 is you can use it for both DS and GBA stuff, where slot 1 is DS only.

MicroSD cards usually come with full-sized SD adapters (so any SD reader will do).  I guess they've solved all the big problems then.  I don't think I'll be getting into it, though.  I haven't been playing anything on portables lately.  I can't even think of any DS gamse I want right now, and the PSP does fine with homebrew stuff.
