Hahaha!  Only in America.  Yeah, send that hardened criminal to the chair.   Not that I think it's OK to rip the head off a bird for kicks.  People do spin chickens by their necks to accomplish the same thing, though, all over the world, including where I'm from.

At first I thought the headline read "Hungry man rips off Duckfat's head."   :)

But Cobra, most of these people do it for a purpose. I don't know this guy's intent, but if he was hungry there surely were better ways to eat than to "rip" (whatever this implies -- this could mean many things) the head off of the duck. He was in a hotel, surely there was food in there. But I do see what you are saying -- we often over sensationalize these things.

And I did the same thing with the thread title. I'm sure everyone here from AOG will make a reference subconsciously.

Sensitivity is something we learn as we go along.  I'm from a time and a place where animals were considered things--in particular, animals that end up on your dinner plate.  Now I know about and accept the worship of animals in America.  But I still find it jarring whenever I see someone treated as a murderer because of cruelty to animals.  I'm not saying the act was OK.  I simply find the reaction way out of proportion.

I can't say I disagree entirely.  It's obviously not a good thing that he did there, but lets not humanize these animals too much.  For all intensive purposes he just hunted and killed a duck with his bare hands out of season.  The duck probably didn't suffer anymore than if it had been shot, and the only matter complicating it as far as I'm concerned is that someone owned that duck.

Yeah, the guy should be punished, and punished more harshly then if he had just shot a duck out of season, but this isn't anything more cruel (actually probably less so) then animal testing, hunting in general, or the course of nature.  There was a story a day or so ago about a guy going around his neighbourhood, taking people's cats (and strays), and feeding them to his pitbulls.  That's what laws like this are probably for; whacked and fucked up people doing this thing because it gets them off (or they want to raise dogs that kill).

My main thing here (although I certainly didn't explain my thoughts well) is that you can't have a legal system punish this guy with jail time, yet bring up the fact that the prison system is overcrowded and that it has an effect on sentencing.

haha I could care less about this topic. I just saw the headlines, and thought it would be funny if I added "Fat" to the headline on the subject title. :P

As for the subject, I think GPW sums up my thoughts. There should be some form of punishment, but let's not make this bigger than it is.
