If you have Bioshock for 360, DON'T AUTOUPDATE!!!
« on: Wednesday, September 05, 2007, 08:55:07 PM »
Ok, so I've been playing Bioshock and it is awesome, and judging by the other thread, most of you seem to like it as well. However, if you have it for 360, don't autoupdate. I haven't played in a couple of days and autoupdated. I played for about 5 minutes before the game froze. Then I turned my console off and on and the main start up screen froze. Then, I got the three red rings of death.

I've looked around in some other forums and it seems that people have been having some problems with the game skipping after applying the patch, as well as some extreme cases, like mine, where their consoles have shit the bed.

So I'm really fucking pissed right now. All I wanted to do was play the game for half an hour before going to bed, now my 360 is out of commission for a good 2 weeks at least.

If I didn't have Metroid Prime 3 to tide me over, I would probably have gone down to Irrational Studios in Cambridge and punched everyone in the face.

Actually, I think I might just do that on my lunch break tomorrow.  >:(

Do you really think it's the update?  I mean, I sort of fail to see how any update could cause that problem.  No offense to you personally, as obviously your situation sucks, but everybody always complains with every single new game comes out that the same thing happens.  A billion people complained that BioShock (unupdated) broke their 360, just like a billion people complained that The Darkness broke their 360.  But I don't think that was ever the case.

I don't know, the 360 just sort of worries me in general.  Such shoddy workmanship.

eh, i've just done the update (before seeing this thread), and the game has been stalling a little. the controller has disconnected a bunch of times too, despite changing the batteries. i don't know if it's related...

Que, normally I would've thought that maybe it was just my 360 dying on me, but I've read on other forums, such as the official xbox forum, where people have said that their 360's got the the three rings after installing the Bioshock auto update. That's why I don't think that it's a coincidence at this point.

I'd say the same were it not for the fact that everyone is also convinced that every new game destroys their 360s.  I'm willing to concede that it *might* be true, but how do you confirm it, you know?  And what would an update have in it that would destroy a 360 and not make it past QA?  I mean, it doesn't make sense.  That doesn't mean it isn't possible, but it doesn't make sense.

If it *is* true, though... that opens up some interesting stuff.  If it made it through QA, what specifically went wrong and can someone be sued for it?  Would Irrational be held responsible for fucking up people's 360s?  What about Microsoft, as I'm sure the update had to go through them first?

One thing is for sure: the 3rd iteration of the Xbox will be a lot better, quality-wise.  The 360 is a piece of junk and everyone knows it and Microsoft stands to lose over a billion dollars on it.

Not to shit on your parade, HxCeddie but if you are sending in your 360 for repairs, you are most likely going to be waiting 4-6 weeks maybe even longer than 6 weeks.  Microsoft has a HUGE backlog of 360 repairs to get done(I've read 2 brief articles about it, one was in Game Informer).  My friend called about 2 1/2 weeks ago for the box for shipping to be sent and he has yet to still even receive the box so he can ship the damn thing.

If I recall correctly, Joel Gertsmann (of GameSpot) was complaining about the game freezing and stalling for the Bioshock 360 version right out the box, in the review of the game (unupdated) when it first came out.

Your warning would have come a day too late, except that I found a thread over at 2K talking about the update.  First of all, no one knows what the hell the update does.  Second, several people complained about serious hitching after they updated.  For some, clearing the cache helped; for others, it did not.  I found a very similar thread on the X360 forum for the game [edit: and there you are, revealing your scary fate].  Fortunately for me, I had already beaten the game to death, and gotten all the achievements.  One thing that infuriates me about updating policy is that if you don't, you are summarily disconnected from Live while you play the game.  I understand the reason, for multiplayer games.  Bioshock is strictly single player.

Anyway, I rejected the update last night, and I will continue to do so.  Better still, I think if I play another game, I'll do it under my offline profile "DejaVu".

Sorry about your console blowing up.  If I may be allowed to guess, I'll say that it was marginal already, and the strain of Bioshock with a somehow-fucked-up patch pushed it over the edge.  Hope MS makes good on their promises.  They've acknowledged the issue publicly, and devoted $1 billion to it.

Well Greg Vederman recently verified that the Bioshock autoupdate has been causing an alarming number of consoles to crash.

I probably going to skip all the consoles this gen.

Whoa!  Who?  Link please?

If you saw my thread on the General Discussion board, you know they've moved the console up to more-compact, cooler-running technology.  It should solve the heat-caused RROD problem.

No problems here yet.  I did reject the Bioshock update, and will continue to do so.  I never play it under my HypnoticCoqui online profile anymore.  Offline only.  Why mess around with something that works so well as is?

Looks like all 360'ers are gonna have to lay off the Adam upgrades, for the time being. :P

Crickets don't chirp without an abortive joke.  I don't even know what that was.

I'm not updating it either.  I'm here a lot of freezing and hiccups related to the patch.  It can be resolved by clearing the cache, according to some forum goers, but why bother?  The game works fine as it is.

That's it exactly.  The problem is that if you want to be online, you have to accept it.  You get disconnected from Live if you reject any updates to whatever you're using.  No big deal in this case, since it's single-player, unless you care about getting your achievements online.

I'm still waiting for Pug to back up what he said about Greg Vederman.  I found out who he is, but have not found anything he's said on the subject of the patch causing 360s to freeze.

You still get the achievements, they're just not dated, so no biggie.
