THQ Bought Homeworld IP from Vivendi
« on: Saturday, November 03, 2007, 11:45:56 PM »
THQ bought the Homeworld IP from Vivendi.
And as we all know, we know who owns Relic -- THQ.

Hmmm...Maybe Relic will eventually do a Homeworld 3...

Homeworld Franchise Potentially Ressurected As Relic Owner THQ Acquires Trademark
by Nick Breckon Nov 03, 2007 8:03pm CST

Fans of the groundbreaking Homeworld series of 3D space RTS games may yet have reason to hope for a new sequel.

Forum members of the fan site Relic News have today uncovered a US trademark document that appears to prove the rights to the Homeworld name have changed hands from Vivendi Universal to publisher THQ, the owner of original Homeworld developer Relic Entertainment.

Though only the trademark is mentioned, it would seem unlikely that THQ attained the name without also acquiring the license to use the intellectual property. The law firm now handling the trademark, Wolf Greenfield, specializes in IP transactions.

The document, which appoints a slew of new attorneys to represent Homeworld, is signed by THQ executive vice president of business and legal affairs James M. Kennedy. The transaction took place on August 14, 2007, with a similar transfer of the Homeworld: Cataclysm expansion trademark having been signed on the same day.

While the ties to THQ only appear on the most recent documents, Vivendi Universal lawyer Rod Rigole had transferred power of attorney to Douglas R. Wolf, the current Homeworld representative, way back in July 18 of 2006--indicating that some type of transaction may have occured over a year ago.

The Homeworld license had been owned by publisher Sierra Online--now a subsidiary of Vivendi--since it released Relic's debut game, the strategy series' first entry, in 1997. Relic was purchased by THQ for $10 million in May of 2004, and has since gone on to produce the critically acclaimed PC RTS titles Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (2004) and Company of Heroes (2006).

THQ has been investing more development effort in ambitious hardcore-oriented PC titles than most major publishers recently, with its acquisition of Relic and its release of games such as Iron Lore's Titan Quest, Gas Powered Games' Supreme Commander, and GSC Game World's S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Homeworld puts players in control of a vast space fleet, allowing would-be admirals to move their ships on a fully-3D plane in real time. The first game was released on the PC in 1999, to critical and commercial success. The Homeworld: Cataclysm stand-alone expansion was subsequently developed by Barking Dog Studios, with Relic returning to the franchise in 2003 with Homeworld 2. Both games were published by Sierra.

Seems like an unusual purchase.  I don't think either of the Homeworld games did very well at retail.

As idol pointed out last night, THQ owning Homeworld is good because Relic made Homeworld, and THQ owns Relic.  They must have some future plans for the franchise.

I'm guessing HW3 is coming and Relic will likely be making it, if THQ decided to buy HW IP.

THQ has really gotten in good w/ the PC games crowd, lately -- STALKER series; CoH series; TQ series; and that is just to name a few here!

Sweet. I am happy for them, even though I've never played Homeworld... yes I know.

To be honest, you aren't missing much.  The control scheme is retarded and the game is simply too hard.  I've never been able to beat mission 4 in the first game even tough I've probably played it 20 times.

OK that's fine then. I've seen my friend play it, and while it looked cool, visually it didn't look like my cup of tea.

It's a shame Sy isn't here to defend the games.  I was never able to give Homeworld the time I wanted to, but I can say that "you aren't missing much" is a gross overstatement.  Both games reviewed quite well, since reviews weren't wholly sensationalist nonsense back then, and the first game was very different from other offerings at the time.  Quite difficult, true, but still good stuff.

Yea back why Sy was a chick, that game seemed to be a favorite for months.

But yea, they really reviewed well. I think PCG had Homeworld 2 as its game of the year, which made it all the weirder that I didn't play it.

Agreed. I haven't played any of the sequels, but the original was quite fun. Be ready to invest some time into them, though. It has a somewhat steep learning curve, depending on your skill level with these types of games.

Homeworld still is one of my favorite games. I personally thought the controls were just fine and only difficult in that Homeworld was one of the first games of it's kind to bring some up and down controls into the mix.

I've said lots of times how well the game does stuff like the story and all that sort before, but I do actually have some new to mix into things because I did replay the game during the summer. The game is unapologetically slow and tedious so I can see why that turn so many people off. For me though, I love it. While those are adjectives that usually get tacked onto games that become that because of poor design decisions, I'm pretty sure Relic wanted the game to be that way from the start and proceeded to make the most interesting game they can. I'm probably a bit masochistic, because it's just fun for me in how it works. I can also see how that doesn't work for everyone and a deep love of space battles and ships is probably a must to help pass the time of slow movement. I still enjoy just staring at the ships do their thing in between battles and of course the battles are great. I also love how the game doesn't really shy from being hard. You could get through most of the game and not be well off enough to make it through the final battles, so you're screwed and have to start over. It also feels like another stance that Relic took and just went with it. I can respect that because I enjoyed it so much.

The sequel was cool and great, I think went more into the mold of a standard game. Also, the story just isn't up to the level of the first game. It's worth playing because it's probably more fun than the first, just not as interesting. Plus, it just looks awesome. There really aren't any games out there that look quite like it and it just moves so nicely.
