Rate-Christmas-Ideas-For-Girlfriend Thread
« on: Friday, December 07, 2007, 12:18:09 PM »
We've only been going out for about a month, but have known each other for about a year.  She describes herself as a "competitive gift-giver", so I know she is going to try to (and will likely) outdo me.

Here's what I got..

1. Star Wars DVDs (Episodes 4-6). It's something that she mentioned she wanted. She explicitly told me she wanted a season of Gilmore Girls on DVD, but I don't want to just give her what she asked for. That's boring. Instead, I went for this because she did say she wanted it and was probably going to purchase it some time, but won't see it coming.

2. Books. Much like me, she likes reading books about religion/spirituality/mythology/mysticism/etc. I picked up a book that I really enjoyed that she should read and another that I think she will like.  She's a bookworm.

3. Boots. Those furry and fuzzy leathery kind of ones she enjoys. She was wearing a pair of her sisters at Thanksgiving and mentioned how she really wanted a pair. Only problem is that I may mess up in picking out a pair. I found one that is similiar to the ones she wants, but I can't find the ones she wants anywhere.  Rather than trying to pick out one, I am thinking I will get her a card that says something like "You have a pair of fuzzy, leather boots that you can pick out with me at your convenience".  Is that lame?

Total comes out to like 50$ + however much the boots are (probably like 100-130).

Other things that I was considering were tickets to an Opera(mentioned that she really likes the opera), dirty stuff, or some type of dinosaur memorabilia(which may still happen).

Blah. I hate this time of year. So stressful.
Suck it, Pugnate.

if you're buying her clothes, get help from one of her friends. she's going to have a far better idea what your girlfirend wants than you. that's the only advice i can give.

The DVDs are ok, books are good, not sure about the boots, like Beo said be sure to go shopping with one of her friends.  Also, I'd do my best to surprise here with something unique and romantic that is unexpected.  Girls love that crap.

I utterly suck at gift giving and have no advice.

A girl that likes Star Wars and enjoys reading?  What bizzaro world did you find her in and where can I find more like her?

Well to be fair, most girls enjoy reading. And many don't mind Star Wars.

I suck at gift giving, too. Something unique and romantic?  AHH.  I can't think of anything.

Don't sweat it, man.  It won't kill you as long as you get the other stuff right.  I'm getting my wife a DS Lite for Christmas and a flashcart for homebrew.  Sure, she's a game nerd like me, but it's far from what you'd call romantic.

Depending on how much you're looking to spend, how about opera tickets with dinner at a nice restaurant before hand.  Are you doing this in Denver?

You want to out do her?  make her something that she wouldn't ever think you'd be able to make.  Sew or cook or bake something.  I can coach you if you're going to bake/cook something.

OR like antares said.. Opera tickets, then take her home where you have dinner ready or something..
Taken.

As discussed in IRC last night, there will soon be a Family Guy for everything.

Thinking Opera tickets would be better than the boots?  I am only hesitant to go with those because I took her to a symphony orchestra thing earlier in the year on a whim. The opera is more prestigious and what not, but its the same idea.

boots are nice and something she can have more memories with.  Opera night is just one night.. the memory will be there but..

but, just dont' get her so mad at you that she'll throw the boots at you when problems arise.

One thing I like to do every so often for someone is make a mix tape.  Like a legit mix tape.  Bust out the cassette player and sit there for hours choosing out the right songs for her.

Heh, such an eighties and nineties thing to do, but it's awesome.  Anybody from our generation should love that on some level at the very least.

Hell yea.  Anyone who knows the significance has to at least appreciate the effort.  Sitting in front of the stereo for hours at a time, waiting for the right song, hoping you got the whole song and didn't start too late or cut it off too short.  And wondering if there's enough tape left for the last song on that one side.

We have it easy now with mix cds, pshh.
