Firefox deleted all my favorites.  If anybody knows any way to retrieve them it's be greatly appreciated.  I can't figure out what happened, but it looks like the browser reset itself, because all the default settings were back on.

On your firefox shortcut, add a -p to the end of it. It lets you select your profile. A new one probably got made, and your bookmarks are in the other one.

Or you can look in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles and see if theres more than one profile directory. If so, look in each one and you'll see bookmarks.html. One of them will have all your old bookmarks in it.

Had the exact same thing happen to me.  I was so pissed that I nearly went back to IE.  Then I got over it.  Try idol's suggestions.  In my case, they were gone, vanished.

Ah!  Thank you idol.  I do remember this happening before a while back and that's exactly what I did to fix it.  I just couldn't remember what I did.  Awesome.

EDIT:  Fuck!  They're gone.
