So apparently Lego Star Wars ...
« on: Sunday, December 28, 2008, 03:11:30 PM »
... is awesome.  I didn't really know if I believed it when I heard people talk about it being fun before, but I must say, I should have paid attention.  I think almost as a gag my father in law got my wife the "complete saga" rerelease of Lego Star Wars for Wii, and she fired it up today out of curiosity.  I watched her play it for like 10 minutes and said "This looks way more awesome than it should", and picked up the other wiimote and we started playing coop.  2 hours later we were both still laughing our asses off tromping around the Mos Eisley Cantina customizing our own Lego characters and going back to use newly-unlocked characters to try and get more of the bonuses from previous levels.  It's hysterical, and while you can't really call it deep (it's basically just an action/adventure platformer thingy), there's a whole lot more to it than I thought there would be.  Tons upon tons of stuff to unlock, different characters to use, bonuses from each level to get, etc.  And while Star Wars on the whole has been dead to me for a long time, this is a spoof which just makes it even more fun.  The little cutscenes and everything are really well done and often quite funny.

Anyway... color me surprised.  If you never tried either of the Lego Star Wars games out before, now might be a good time.  Apparently the DS version, while stripped down of a couple extra characters and the bounty hunter missions, is actually quite robust as well.

I have Lego SW II.  I played the demo and liked it.  I saw the game for $30 sometime after that, and I picked it up.  I have yet to play it.

My brother more or less swears by the series (the Lego Batman and Indy games), but that has a lot to do with his son loving them. He also got the DS version for Christmas, but I haven't actually taken a look at it myself. I've played a little of the Indy one with them, but it was just alright. I imagine the Star Wars stuff fits the whole idea better.

I've heard/read comments in a lot of places that say the series basically has no business being as good as it is. So, it actually makes for games that parents can give their children without feeling like they're giving them crap and wouldn't mind playing themselves.

I've heard nothing but good things about the series generally.  I've never touched the games myself, but you've certainly tempted me.  I was reading a site linked to off of digg a while ago which basically said they still plan on expanding the series (of Lego games), but want to avoid them getting stale, which apparently the last two games were bordering on.  I imagine the PC version of the Starwars compilation is cheap right now - I should check that out.

I got Lego Indiana Jones with my Xbox. It's not a bad game, but I would have really rather have gotten Lego Star Wars just because the universe is cooler.

Never thought you'd get into something thats Star Wars, I know its not the universe that appeals to you in the game, it just still seems odd to me. Hell I like Star Wars and I didnt really have any interest in these games. I played some at a game shop a couple times and it still didnt grab me.

It's the fact that it takes the franchise and does something different with it.  It's recognizable to me because like any nerd I'm familiar with a lot of the material whether I like it or not (and I did traditionally enjoy the first three movies -- I started hating the franchise after Episode I, gradually hating it more and more as it grew toward the theatrical release of that stupid CG Clone Wars BS), and it's that recognition that makes it fun.  I was also a huge Lego nut as a kid, so it's nostalgic in the extreme.  And since the cutscenes are basically short little comedic versions of the films and none of the characters talk, that renders insignificant or nonexistant much of what I found so intolerable on film.  I like the universe, I just hate everything they've done to butcher it.

Yeah, Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is pretty fun too.  I don't know how awesome they are if you play by yourself since I always did them co-op.
