College Basketball
« on: Sunday, January 04, 2009, 07:38:44 PM »
Anyone here following this season? I know that we have two or three sports fans on the boards.

I actually don't follow my college that much, partly because they are mid-major and aren't very good and mostly because I grew up in NC in the heart of tobacco country (i.e. tobacco road). I live *very* close to one good NC team and have family in pretty much all of the other schools.

Anyways, UNC lost tonight for the first time. They were #1 in the country and they kind of fell apart. They didn't shoot well, particularly down the stretch, and BC just had too big of a lead to overcome. But in the end, I think that it is a good thing for UNC. They have blown out every other opponent, and you need to lose to know how good you are. So I think they will come out of it being even better.

Anyways, predictions? I know it's early but I'm sure some people here have a favorite.

You went to BC?

But yeah, the rankings don't really matter until March Madness. UNC won't drop much after this, but in any case no one doubts that they are a strong team - regardless of the rankings.

I guess it's different here in NC, because college basketball is where we thrive as far as sports.

No, didn't go to BC.
Went to Massasoit Community and then afterward transferred over to Bridgewater State.

BC's like the only real good local college team around here! :P

I have and will always believe that basketball is the stupidest sport there is.  Scores over 100 regularly?  Why even have a defense?

I used to try to get into the whole March Madness thing because everyone else does but I just can't.  I just can't do it.  The sport is too dumb.

The sport isn't dumb, you just have to recognize it for what it is. But to do that you have to watch it enough to appreciate it.

Also, it's far from the stupidest sport there is. Have you heard of curling?

I don't know, in my eyes basketball gives curling a good run.

My family are huge Xavier University fans and I go to the University of Cincinnati, which used to be a top program until Huggins got fired.  I know plenty about basketball and have just never been able to force myself to really get into it.

In a way, it's sort of like how I am with RPGs.  For a long time I played them and played them and I never really made it even 1/3 the way into most of them.  Then one day I just realized: "You know what?  It's clear to me now.  I just simply don't like these."

I used to curse basketball in the winter when TV was only a handful of channels.  So much stuff would get preempted to show games and the interminable tournaments.  I never liked the sport either.

I find basketball boring to watch.  It's fun to play though.
