Light graffiti
« on: Thursday, April 03, 2008, 04:45:35 PM »
I saw a page the other night that had a lot of cool examples of this. Basically, you take a long exposure photo and move lights around while its being taken. Doing this, you can make words or pictures in light. I wanted to try this last night, but got into FFXII and sorta forgot. And tonight its raining, so I can't really do it outside. So I did a test photo facing the mantle. While it was still light out. And hey, it still worked!

That's cool man, I love that stuff.  What kind of light did you use?

Haha, kickass!  All the photos you shared with me the other day were great.  Can't wait to see you try some more.

Belmont, I just used a cheapy flashlight. I also tried using a laser pointer to draw on stuff, but it didnt look good with as much light as I had. Has to be really dark for that.

When I took photography in high school, a guest student teacher came in and showed us a little bit about doing this kind of thing.  You can also get a cool effect if you have a portable flash by walking around and setting it off in different locations.  In a very dark room it would be the only illumination and you can get very interesting illumination.  I've always wanted to try it, but never have had a good camera that can take a long exposure.

Cool stuff. There was a commercial a few months ago that used the same effect

Yeah, it was a couple commercials.  Ironically for some stupid cell phone company.  They were cool, though.

EDIT - found 'em!

This one establishes the concept ...
... then this one does something awesome with it.

It's called "light painting". It's a cool technique.
