Western MMO
« on: Friday, May 22, 2009, 05:12:43 AM »
I was talking with belmont the other night about the new red dead revolver game, and a thought came to mind what about a western style MMO.  It's a part of the gaming niche that has never really been tried.  To many people are trying to make games to compete with WoW, but why not make a game that has never been done before.  Yes it's a risk that it wont succeed but trying to do a fantasy mmo with WoW being the monster that it is isn't going to work.  Well I did my research and there's a group that's trying to get a western mmo going.  They are in a pre-production phase.  They have some great ideas for this game, and have been working at it for a long time.  They are wanting to bring people back to the old west as best they can.  This is what they have so far http://frontier1859.com/mmorpg/

Interesting looking.  I like that they seem to have a survival/frontier sort of bent to it.  Could be cool.

I guess now somebody just needs to start development.

The issue they have is finding the producer to start making the game.  They are in negotiations from what i read with a company and hope to start this year.  If they need it i'll even donate to help get the game into production.

I'm not sure what it is but I never could get into western anything, even movies. Call of Juarez, Red Dead Revolver, I'd never know if these games were any good because I don't even read about them or watch videos just because they're in western settings. I'm not sure how many other people have zero interest in anything in a western setting, but if there's too many the game wouldn't do well.

I actually only clicked this thread because I thought by western MMOs you meant not Japanese. :P

Ha that's what I thought at first as well, then Iw as intrigued by the thought of a Western-themed game.

There are some good Western-themed games out there: Call of Juarez, GUN, and of course the classic side-scrolling shooter Sunset Riders.

I get the impression this Western MMO is based on some level of realism, kinda like WolfQuest; which was pretty cool but had no depth and no sense of character development though it was educational. In all fairness it was advertised as a wildlife simulator anyway.

Not really westerns, Trigun is post apocalypse and Blazing Saddles yes it was a western style stetting but it was pure comedy.  As for the game frontier 1859 they want to make the character development one of the most important parts of the game.  Also one of the few mmo's that talk about having a perma-death feature in it.  I guess what I like about it the most is the fact it's never been done before and so far they have quite a bit support from it's fan community.  The issue is it's hard to advertise a game that's in a pre-production stage.
