I'm done with Windows Messenger
« on: Friday, October 20, 2006, 11:47:09 PM »
I've finally gotten sick of the way MSN/Windows Messenger refuses to stay logged in. That's bad enough on it's own, but it won't actually tell me that it's logged out and will look like everything is fine until I go to send a message or something. So, I don't know if I'm actually logged in or not (and the majority of the time I'm not).

We had that thread talking about different IM programs a little back and it seemed like Googletalk is a good way to go. I've installed it and things seem pretty nice and clean so far. If you feel like talking to me from now on, that's how to get me unless we decide on something better. I'll be listed under sirean.syan@gmail.com

I know how you feel man.. Windows Live Messenger (MSN Messenger) is pretty irritating. The biggest issues I'm having are when we want to transfer a file the stupid "Accept" thing doesn't appear to the person on the receiving end, and the same thing happens with Voice or Webcam.

I'd switch to GoogleTalk but I think it's still in beta, and all my contacts are on MSN. Actually I'm gonan download the latest version of GoogleTalk and see how they've progressed. My Gmail contacts list has a new GoogleTalk icon there, so they must have done something new.

EDIT:
The new GoogleTalk is awesome! It's a long way from the last beta I tried.

Meh, aside from file transfer problems that Xessive has mentioned, I've had no other problems whatsoever with Windows Live Messenger.

I have loved Trillian since I started using it, that way you can talk to anyone who still uses MSN, you can also talk to anyone who uses AIM or YIM as well.  I'm curious about GoogleTalk though, might give it a try sometime.

I had Trillian for the longest time. Got some pretty decent skins for it as well. The main reason I stopped using it was that it had some incompatiblity issues with some of the people on my list. Also it couldn't do voice chats with people who had updated to a newer MSN Messenger, unless they got Trillian as well. It was a great program, it provided an ideal solution to a universal problem (even including an IRC client was pretty cool), but it just didn't work out in the end for me.

For voice chatting Skype is the ultimate (so far), short of direct VoIP applications. It works great with conference calls too.

I used Trillian until I kept having a problem where I had to delete and re-add my MSN account like weekly to get connected.

Then I went to Miranda IM, a similar program will lots of plugins and promise.  But then development suddenly halted for no reason.  We're talking the thing had updates twice a month, then nothing for four months.  Not even a post on the forum or on the main page.  No idea what happened.

So I moved to GAIM.  It's got issues because it is based on GTK+ and the Windows port of GTK+ blows, but I like it overall.

I'd move to GoogleTalk, but I only have like three Gmail contacts.

msn for me is all about convenience... it's what all my friends use, so if I want to talk to them I use msn

I could use trillian, but meh... I just don't care

That's how it is for me too, but since I talked to Sy more often than anybody, I'm switching to Gtalk.  I've tried Trillian and GAIM, but I hate both of them, and MSN really sucks balls now, even after patching it up with community stuff.  It's just too heavy.  I don't like it at all.

I can add a Google Talk field for the forum profiles...

Edit:  Done anyway.  Too bad it doesn't show anything in the little icons to the left, or in the member list.

Edit 2:  Oh, it does have an icon over on the left side.  I just had to fix it.

The only thing I dont like about GTalk is that its missing conference chat. You cant have 3 people in a "room" all talking.

Double damn. Hopefully that'll get added in a later version.

I always liked Windows Messenger (not MSN Messenger) because it was rather plan and didn't try to be top heavy. It still is, but it's just too unrelible for how far these programs and internet connections have come. I really only talk to a few people on the thing anymore and I don't need a ton of top heavy features. It seems like GAIM and Trilian are way more than a I want and it seems like they have a tendency to fight within themselves. I don't want to mess with all that, so Googletalk seems to fill the bill right now.

Ok, so I set up a bot. Its running on my machine now, so it obviously wont be up all the time. I suppose we can test it out, maybe I'll give others the login and stuff to run it themselves and start the conferencing.

All chats are logged to the gmail account.

Simply add overwritten.net@gmail.com to your buddy list. If you see it online, that means the conference is running. Talking to him will relay your message to everyone else talking to him.

This how to set up your own.

Chat bot
Download the newest version, 1.32. Turns out that is newer than 1.6. Must be new math.

You will need Python installed since its just a python script. Once you install python, unzip the chat bot somewhere. Then you just doubleclick confbot.py to run the script and start the bot. Let me know if you want the password to run the bot and I'll give it to you.

You'll want to say this to the bot when you first load it:

)setoption private on

This stops the bot from updating the web site. This will keep people other than us off it.

So, thats about it. If you dont see the bot online you can run it yourself. If you just want to talk to everyone just add overwritten.net to your buddy list.

*EDIT*

Looks like que is still in the room. I guess you have to do a )quit to stop the bot from sending you messages.
