Steam...
« on: Tuesday, October 03, 2006, 07:29:26 PM »
I am trying to download the Defcon demo on Steam.  It says to "Click here" to install the demo.  I do, and nothing happens.  If I click to purchase it, likewise, nothing happens.  What's up?

Edit:  Nevermind, I guess it uses IE to browse, and I had security set to high.

Your problem is you're trying to download it on Steam.

And here comes the Steam hate.

I was playing Defcon minutes after the release and I paid 10$ for it on Steam.  So I win.
Suck it, Pugnate.

If by 'win' you mean contribute to the endless machinations of the corporate giants who forever feel the need to hold the man down then yes, you do win.

Otherwise you're one of them...a Steamite.

I paid $10 off Steam, got my CD Key, and use a regular Defcon install that doesnt require Steam. Hooray for me!

Idol wins.  But yeah, I'm with keebs.  Shelling out a few bucks more for the box is worth it to me even without the added benefit of avoiding Steam.  But avoiding Steam alone is priceless.

All in all, I love it when it works this way.  I'm all for being able to download games, but I also like to have a physical copy shipped.  I did that with Galactic Civilizations 2 as well, and I was very pleased with that.  I'm fine with the future being online marketplace stuff, as long as I can get a physical product shipped to me.  If I can't get that, I feel ripped off.  Don't ask me why.

Agreed. Steam's a pain -- and I'd rather shell out a few more $$ for a physical copy, if the physical copy avoids it.

For example, I bought X3: Reunion for $5 at the CompUSA retail store for the physical copy, which is selling also on Steam for like $20 to download it.

Though, the physical copy comes w/ StarForce and NOT with STEAM, while the download version comes w/ STEAM. Well, I win b/c with the physical copy, in Q4 they will patch the game which will remove the NEED of StarForce!!! So, I will be avoiding both STEAM and StarForce w/ the physical copy!!! YAY!!! :)

I'm w/ Que -- if I was to download a game, I feel that they should also ship me the physical copy, as well.

That or I should be able to back my copy of the game up and all -- which STEAM does have a utility that does so.

I miss home.. Everyday in the afternoon we used to go to the Beach Club, chill at the beach, and hang in the jacuzzi. Good times.

<@Quemaqua> Okay, my computer just died.  I have no idea what's happening, but for some reason all programs have ceased responding except for mIRC, and I can't even bring up the task manager.
<@idolminds> the hell?
<@Quemaqua> I tried to load Paint Shop and it wouldn't go
<@Quemaqua> then everything just... died
<@idolminds> but you can still use MIRC?
<@Quemaqua> Oh no fucking way.
<@Quemaqua> You aren't going to believe this.
<@idolminds> you win the prize?
<@Quemaqua> hahaha
<@Quemaqua> Dude, of all the programs on my computer, I want you to guess which one was causing the problem.
<@idolminds> Hold on, Im going to think real hard
<@Quemaqua> Or at least which one after I closed it seemed to alleviate the problem.
<@idolminds> Does it rhyme with "ream"?
<@Quemaqua> haha
<@Quemaqua> Yes
<@idolminds> it evil, I just know it
<@Quemaqua> Dude, seriously.  I decided to see if I could still close a program on the task bar, clicked exit... wham, task manager comes up, no errors, and PSP closes without issue.

Hahaha thanks for the revival Que!

I had neglected to look at the date and I was reading through the thread then I saw my post! "Hehh?! Oh."

Steam can be problematic with certain configurations.

I hate the fact that when you download Steam to install it it always installs the old version then has to update itself. Why won't they just give me the whole new version in an installer?

<@Quemaqua> Fuck.  I need to try getting L4D working again, don't I?
<@idolminds> it would be a good idea
<@idolminds> In a strange reversal, I could send you the working files
<@Quemaqua> heh
<@Quemaqua> Well, I think the issue is with Steam, not L4D.
<@Quemaqua> Well, Steam finally updated, and has now been loading for like 5 minutes.

...

<@idolminds> though I should act nice. I actually got it to install DoD:S
<@idolminds> from that backup I made at the meet
<@Quemaqua> Haha, I can't play L4D still.  Guess why?
<@idolminds> because...uh...Steam?
<@Quemaqua> The Steam servers are too busy to handle my request.
<@idolminds> oh I hate that so much
<@Quemaqua> My request to, uh... launch the game?
<@Quemaqua> The one sitting on my hard drive?
<@Quemaqua> The one where if I downloaded a fucking crack I could be playing in 3 minutes?
<@Quemaqua> That one?
<@idolminds> I know. How do people willingly put up with this?
<@Quemaqua> Because people are asslicking subhuman piles of goo.

That sucks pretty bad.  I've never had that one happen.  I haven't tried to play anything on Steam in a pretty long time though.

It doesn't happen often, I'll say that at least.  But it did happen to me once before, late in the life of stock HL2.  And the fact that it happens at all is... ugh.  You know.
