If you guys need a new mouse
« on: Monday, July 13, 2009, 11:39:47 AM »
BB is running a helluva deal on a Logitech MX Revolution mouse.  39.99

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7961011&st=7961011&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1153336299244

I bought one yesterday to replace the original wireless Logitech mouse, forgot the name.  Anyhow, after like 4-5 years of use it was barely holding a charge.

I love love love love this thing.

That's tempting. I have an MX1000 that's been getting progressively worse lately. I did just replace the feet to fix one problem, but the rubber on the sides is all but gone and the buttons are getting soft enough that they occasionally read as a double click. The problem is it's still my favorite mouse design and it's probably been my favorite mouse that I've ever used. I've considered this guy before, but I hate smooth scrolling and totally prefer the clicking wheel. I suppose it might just be that I'm more used to the click. With the price, its easier to justify looking into it.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have a Logitech G5 Laser Mouse now.  I got it as an upgrade over my Logitech MX-510 optical mouse.  I actually prefer the old mouse.  I've had a lot of problems with my PC not detecting the mouse when it turns on and I have to subsequently reseat the USB connection.  Plus the G5 added left/right scroll but in turn made pressing the mouse wheel down without also scrolling the wheel very difficult.

I prefer wired mice to wireless with the only exception being for my laptop so that I don't have to worry about the wire being all tangled in my laptop bag.  I don't get having a wireless mouse for your desktop unless it is for home theater or something like that.

Actually on this one you can have the free scrolling, or if you click down the wheel a mechanism will engage and it will revert back to a conventional clicking wheel.  click it again and it goes back to free scrolling

I looked and the model on the mouse this replaced is the MX1000.  The MX1000 replaced the MX900 I used to have.  Logitech has some really nice high end mice.

Huh. That's interesting. So does pushing the wheel down no longer serve as a 3rd button? I should go look this up because that would be a deal breaker.

I actually had the MX900 too. Keeping up with the nice Logitech mice was something I enjoyed when I was working and I've always been a fan of their stuff. I skipped a bit of a generation because someone decided that only one side button was needed. The choice didn't make much sense to me, but they fixed it at some point.

Edit: Yeah, no middle click if I want to switch between modes. I guess I continue to wait. While I'm a fan of Logitech's hardware, I will never install mouse software again. To make use of all that stuff and keep the old middle button, it seems like I'll have to install the software. No thanks.

I almost never use middle click for anything.  It's too floaty with the rotate, so it's impossible to use for games and stuff since you'll end up switching weapons or whatever other nonsense.  I don't do wireless mice either, and thankfully my old Logitech is still kicking.  They do make the best mice, though.

Yeah, I can't ever recall using the mouse wheel button for anything.  Like Que said, it's pretty wonky for game usage because you'll inevitably end up doing something you didn't mean to.

Course there's also a two-way wheel button on the side that could potentially serve your third mouse button functions?

I suppose, although I'd be curious to see how that works without the software.

And I always use the wheel button. The best example is it is usually the button that I use for reload in FPS, but it's had a place in almost every game that requires several buttons.

I use that wheel button in most games too. For the longest time it was my "use" command but now I'm back to "e" for that. I do use it for other stuff like view-switching or certain item use. I don't have any trouble clicking it without moving the wheel, I guess that depends on the wheel though. My old Microsoft Wireless Mouse had a shit seamless wheel! I hate those!

I can never seem to find a wireless mouse that operates the way I'd like it to, they always have some delay (no matter how small it is) that bugs me. I can use them for general stuff but gaming and drawing require precise movement and acceleration.

My Logitech has a clicky wheel, but not nearly stiff enough to prevent inadvertent scrolling when clicking it.  I mean, you can do it without that much issue if you're careful, but in what FPS do you have time to sit and carefully click a button?  I've had this mouse twice over, and neither time did I consider that button usable for anything that required timing.  Occasionally I'll have it set for something that I use outside of combat or whatever, though.

I can't even remember the model of mouse I have.  I really like it, though.  It's probably like a 2nd or 3rd generation wired optical mouse, so it's pretty freaking old, but it just never dies.

That mouse you have isn't that old. You bought it when you put together your computer, right? That's like three years and it seems to have held up quite well.

So, I went out and bought the mouse. It's charging up right now, so I can't really use it. I do like that they separated the charger and the wireless station though. Combining the two always added to the wire mess at the back of the computer, so it's nice to clear that up.

Actually, you're right.  It's so similar to the last one I'd forgotten that this was a replacement.  Haha, I'm a dolt.  But how the fuck did you remember that?

The only real difference is the speed setting and the "weights" you can fill it with, which despite having all of them in there, it still isn't quite as heavy as I'd like.

Yeah separating that was a welcome improvement.  Hope the mouse serves your needs.  I absolutely love mine.

So far so good. I even bit my tongue and installed the drivers so I could get my middle mouse click back. Since scroll modes can be changed by software, it would be cool if I could assign that search button in the middle as the switch button. I've never used or wanted a search button on a mouse, so having that as the control switch would be pretty sweet. As it is, I have it set so fast scrolling will switch to free mode then go back to clicking.

Edit: Well, so far not so good. I've been playing with the mouse and setting all day and I can't get a group of settings that feels right. It seems like it lags compared to the MX1000 for some reason. I would guess the drivers, but even without them I couldn't get a speed/acceleration setting that I liked. While I know getting a new mouse takes getting used to, I'm not enjoying how the computer handles inputs from this guy. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be returning it now. Oh well.
