Did I Just Screw the Bank?
« on: Tuesday, January 05, 2010, 05:28:11 PM »
Ok, my bank account has no money in it and until I get my shoulder fixed I won't be getting a job anytime soon. So I decided I would try to make a few bucks by uploading files on depositfiles and having people download them. So I had to reestablish my paypal account for my banking account because thats where depositfiles would show me the money.

If you don't know, paypal has you verify your bank account by depositing a few cents in your account. You then log into your paypal account and tell them how much they deposited and your account is all set. When I first signed up for my bank years ago, I did so because they promised $100 when you signed up. Unfortunately it was people who signed up with direct deposit only.

Long story short, I guess they mistaken the paypall verification as direct deposit and I now how $100. I'm going to hold onto it for a while in case they change their mind.

Yeah, I wouldn't spend the $100 for a month or so.

I'm of the opinion that you can never win with banks.  If you don't have any spare cash sitting around I'd hold onto that (as backwards as it may seem).  The last thing you want is to deal with the hassle of a locked account when you're a month into being dead broke and trying to deposit money.

Depending on the bank, it could be your money anyways, assuming you pay taxes.

The banks will always catch a discrepancy if it exists. I'd say you contact the bank and inquire why it is there. The reason is that leaving $100 in the bank is very tempting and far too difficult to do for guys on the brink -- believe me, I've been there. It requires a lot of self control, what with all the tempting nights out there are with the buddies etc.

Call the bank and get it over with as soon as you can. Just ask why they've put in the $100. Who knows... maybe it is for some reason you deserve.

What the hell is direct deposit anyway?

Direct deposit is giving your employer your bank account number, so your paycheck goes directly into your account.

Ahh...

Wow, so they must save a pretty penny with it if they are willing to offer a $100 bonus for it.

Anyway, there is actually a good chance they won't find out... you never know, but I would call them and let them know.
