Quote
WHILE WE ARE IMPRESSED by Apple's Steve Jobs' ability to market anything and get idiots to buy it, we think he scored an own goal this week.

Steve ushered in his favourite US technology hacks and gave them his best shot against Google's Android operating system.

"You know, there's a porn store for Android. Anyone can download them. You can, your kids can. That's just not a place we want to go," Jobs said.

Even the tame US press that prints everything Steve Jobs says, complete with his buzzwords, might have thought he was a bit off the mark with this particular attack on Google.

After all, criticisms of the Ipad include that it is hyper-controlled by Apple and presents a Disney version of the Internet.

The killer application for the world wide web was porn, just like VHS only took off because of the adult entertainment industry. So Jobs had just pointed out to the world plus dog that his latest gadget can't access adult content while the freer Google device can.

Sheeplike US journalists probably pondered how they could put a positive Apple spin on this particular own goal. In the end most of them buried the stupid comment at the end of their coverage of the event as a favour to Jobs.

After all if they did highlight his comment it would only help Android powered smartphone sales, which is something the New York Times and Rupert Murdoch do not want. They're hoping that Apple's walled-garden version of the Internet that it offers on the Iphone and Ipad will deliver paying readers to prop up the decaying US newspaper industry, and Apple is only too happy to oblige for a big chunk of that potential new revenue stream.

But so what if there is a porn store for Android phones? There are adult stores and strip joints in nearly every American town and the fact that there are none in Apple land suggests that there is something wrong with it.

Jobs' desire to claim the moral high ground against Google is unpleasant, coming from a guy who thinks it is okay to gouge customers by overcharging for shiny toys while keeping manufacturing costs low by using Chinese sweatshops that employ child labour and have high employee suicide rates.

Steve Jobs made a mistake by taking a swipe at Android for allowing its users to do what they want rather than what Jobs says they should want. He in effect pointed out that Google makes the terrible mistake of treating its smartphone customers like adults.

Apple products then must be designed for use by only human sexuality denying fundamentalist religious nutcases. Someone really should tell Steve Jobs that no one ever thinks such uptight people are cool. µ

Well, it's not like you can't get porn on the iPad....I mean it has a browser.  You can look at all the still images you want.

But Apple also just banned developers from using Flash to develop applications...for seemingly little reason.  Making some strange moves.

Does it matter?  Just the fact that Apple imposed such a huge restriction should be a clear sign to stay away.  He did it because he can, and he can do it again with anything else he decides to dislike.

Yeah, the official line was "quality concerns". No one buys it...especially when there are thousands of poor quality apps in the store already that are developed with other means. It kind of just seems like a big "fuck you" to Adobe....and they're taking it that way.
