What's that Lassie? Ubisoft just pulled another Clancy franchise outta their asses? No way!

Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, today announced the creation of Tom Clancy's Air Combat, a new Tom Clancy franchise being developed by Ubisoft’s Bucharest studio for next generation consoles and PC. The first air combat game taking place in Tom Clancy’s universe, the brand will launch in 2008.

“Ubisoft has an unrivalled track record of creating and sustaining new brands,” said Serge Hascoet, chief creative officer at Ubisoft. “Our commitment to refreshing our catalogue with regular introduction of new IPs is what keeps gamers coming back for more. With this new brand we’re redefining the aerial combat genre and extending the Tom Clancy universe to deliver a compelling new action titles to next-generation gamers.”

Set in the near future, the game imagines a world where a private military force has accumulated such power that it attacks the USA. Thrust into the cockpits of incredibly powerful and technologically advanced jet fighters, gamers will benefit from hi-tech piloting assistance, providing comfort, security and enhanced perception. As players gain skills and confidence, they will be able to shed the assistance. But before choosing performance over security, they’ll have to weigh the risks carefully.

“We are confident that this new brand will become the new benchmark for flight combat games and will be, like other Tom Clancy based games, an instant online multiplayer hit,” says Sebastien Delen, managing director of Ubisoft’s Bucharest studio. “The player will experience all the action and excitement of modern air combat, from intense dog fighting to tactical strikes."

This is just a personal opinion, but jet fighter games bore the snot out of me. Oh boy, lock on missile...fire and forget.

Now you give me prop planes with machineguns on them and you've got some fun shit.

It doesn't matter. You know they're going to make it more arcade than simulator. I'm thinking something along the lines of Ace Combat, only slightly more simish.

I'm not really a fan of modern flight sims either, but I understand their appeal for plane junkies. I can respect a person willing to spend months learning how to simply take off in a proper fashion because the game is so gut bustingly realistic that forgetting to read a textbook sized manual will barely get you two feet off the ground. However, the Falcon series isn't made for everyone and Tom Clancy games supposedly are. They're not going to make the game very realistic so average Tom Clancy fan Joe will pick up a copy.

If I remember my history correctly, I think Korean-war flight sims are the sweet spot.  Jet planes before computers and guidance systems did anything for you.  Machine guns and straight-ahead or simple heat-seeking missiles.

But yeah, they can get intensely boring.  I have a demo of . . . oh, now I forget the name.  It's a WW2 flight sim on the X360.  I play it occasionally and enjoy it, but I can't see buying the whole game.  I get enough of it from the demo.

Ubisoft(R) and GeoEye Integrate Satellite Imagery into Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X(TM)
Tom Clancy Game to Use Photo-Realistic Satellite Images to Portray Real World Backdrop for Air Combat Video Game

Last update: 1:24 p.m. EDT Aug. 26, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 26, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Today, Ubisoft and GeoEye, Inc. announced that GeoEye, a premier provider of satellite, aerial and geospatial information, has provided high-resolution images taken from its commercial Earth-imaging IKONOS satellite for integration into Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X for the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the Sony PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system and on Windows-based PC. Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X will be available in early 2009.

The H.A.W.X development team is working closely with specialists at GeoEye to integrate realistic satellite images for every location throughout the game, including Rio de Janeiro, Cape Canaveral and the Middle East. With more than 16 international locations in the game, every mission will have players flying over GeoEye-provided satellite imagery in a three-dimensional environment creating an unparalleled dogfighting experience.

GeoEye's IKONOS satellite was the world's first commercial Earth imaging satellite and its imagery is currently being used for US national security, mapping, air and marine transportation, environmental monitoring and insurance risk management. The amazing quality and detail of the IKONOS images will lend realism to Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, giving gamers a feeling of immersion that will plunge them into the air combat mission of the game.

"High-resolution satellite imaging is moving from the black world of intelligence to the white world of commerce and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X will bring that reality to gamers," said Mark Brender, vice president, corporate communications and marketing at GeoEye. "With video game graphics becoming more realistic, the use of high-quality photographic ground textures in H.A.W.X adds true photo-realism to the air combat experience."

During the development process the H.A.W.X team has also worked with the U.S. Geological Survey and the Center for Earth Resources Observations and Science (USGS/EROS) to understand how to best create a topographical 'underpinning' for the satellite imagery, creating a very realistic representation of the Earth.

"We are extremely grateful to GeoEye for their collaboration with Ubisoft and pleased with the level of quality and service we've received," said Travis Getz, authenticity coordinator for the H.A.W.X development team. "GeoEye's amazing imagery, combined with the intense aerial combat experience in H.A.W.X, makes this a perfect partnership for everyone -- especially gamers."

About Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X
Developed by Ubisoft's Bucharest studio, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X delivers an intense and authentic aerial combat experience by fully leveraging the benefits of the next-generation platforms. The story begins in the year 2014. As the era of the nation-state draws quickly to a close, the rules of warfare evolve even more rapidly. More and more nations become increasingly dependent on private military companies (PMCs), elite mercenaries with a lax view of the law. The Reykjavik Accords further legitimize their existence by authorizing their right to serve in every aspect of military operations. While the benefits of such PMCs are apparent, growing concerns surrounding giving them too much power begin to mount.
Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X is the first air combat game set in the world-renowned Tom Clancy video game universe. Cutting-edge technology, devastating firepower and intense dogfights bestow upon this new title a deserving place in the prestigious Tom Clancy franchise. Soon, flying at Mach 3 becomes a right, not a privilege.
