Ideally, you're supposed to sit approx. 2m away from a 32" TV (and larger), according to health recommendations. That's the "ideal" setup anyway. We don't always have the luxury of space so we compensate as well as we can.

Regardless of the ideal setup, wouldn't Kinect mainly be for people who want to flail about in front of their TV, like the Wii crowd, who would require that kind of space anyway?

Btw, just for the record I sit about 1m from a 32" TV which I'm using as my monitor (at 1080p) and by God all your words look glorious! Every post on OW is like a headline to me now! Even the MyD's posts seem more significant!

I beg to differ, about the Wii, that is.  The controllers for that work very well from 2 feet away, and while *sitting*.

It's supposed to shut down when it overheats.  I don't know what I'm looking at here other than display issues.  The uploader didn't say how he knows it's overheating.  Not saying there isn't a problem.  I'm saying I don't know what is causing it.

Edit:  The only intelligent comment to that video so far:

Quote
This video shows no indication whatsoever that this 360 "overheated." Juxtaposing said 360 and a t.v. together with the headline "NEW SLIM XBOX 360 OVERHEATING! CHECK IT OUT!" does not mean people should infer that it did just that. The bands of lines running down the screen could be due to a variety of faults, and yes maybe it is because of the 360, or maybe the game, or the t.v. its self. Evidently, the GPU/CPU chip IS a good idea because it's 1 45nm instead of 2 90nm ones which = less heat.

Yeah, the Wii has that loophole where a flick of the wrist can sub for a swing of the arm. When the devices get more accurate (as depicted in the Kinect and PS3 Move) they will demand a more precise range of movement. Imagine when they'll actually be able to differentiate between currently indistinguishable movements e.g. swing and big swing or stab and lunge.

I'd only ever consider these things if I had the space anyway, especially when you think about unique accessories like WiiFit or the good ol' Dance Dance Revolution mats.

About the X360 Slim, that vid doesn't really give much info beyond screen artifacts and a child present at a CoD game. I kinda wanna have faith in the new Xbox. Time will tell.

But the 3DS is – seriously – the coolest hardware I’ve ever seen at E3… It’s nothing short of magical, both in the effect the stereoscopic stuff had on me and in the way the tech works. Not that I really understand how it works – not yet anyway! The 3DS was – dare I say it? – almost Disney-like in the magical feeling it evoked in me and I suspect you’ll have a similar reaction when you get your hands on it. And note that I said “when,” not “if.” That was no accident. Trust me – you’re gonna want and you’re gonna get a Nintendo 3DS.

Damn.  That impressive, really?  I have paid no attention to the 3DS at all so far.  I'm going to have to look into the tech at least.

Edit:  OK, from what I'm reading, the 3D screen appears to be lenticular, or what I called "prismatic" when I speculated about 3D without glasses around here somewhere.  (I didn't know "lenticular" then.)  Frankly, I don't see how else it could work.  I think it's far from ideal, and certainly would not work on TV screens.  It works on a handheld because you can adjust the position easily, and only you are watching it.

Edit 2:
If it's not real 3D (i.e., if it's an illusion) then it has to deliver a separate perspective into each eye.  If you don't need glasses, then the trick has to be accomplished some other way.  Prismatic screen?  Hell, I don't know.  It seems like magic at this point.  I'd love to see them pull it off, however it's done.

Yay for working search.

Remember that 3D game they used to have at arcades?  It was called Time Travelers or something like that and didn't require glasses.

And yeah the search is pretty awesome here.  It's all because of that DonationCoder.com package.

According to Wikipedia, that uses a "huge curved mirror", which is very different from lenticular.  I don't think I ever saw this in the arcades.
