Transformers - War for Cybertron
« on: Monday, June 28, 2010, 12:23:56 AM »
Wow, I just checked this out and it looks pretty amazing. Seems to be the best Transformers game so far.

It's set in the past, long before the events of the original animated series, and apparently it is canonically correct. It's also more inspired by the animated series than the recent films.

Take a look at the GameTrailers review.

Pug, I think this is the one for you!

Sorry Pyro... I'll chime in since I played through the game over the past couple of days (it was a little finishing school treat).

I'm not a huge Transformers fan, but I really enjoy when the franchise is done right and this is totally done right. All the characters seem spot on and nearly everything that comes out of their mouths (speaker?) is perfect for what they represent. There are some great Starscream-Megatron moments, Soundwave is still gets shit done, and Optimus is still the glue that holds the Autobots together. Things are pretty straightforward, but Transformers is more about archetypes than deep characters. In other words, I think the developers got what makes Transformers cool and didn't screw around with that. The game itself isn't anything extremely special, but it pretty fun when things get going and I didn't feel like I was playing just to see the thing through.

As a side note, it launched at $40 for PC which is a pretty decent deal. It's definitely a port, but when it's priced like that one day one it's easy to forgive the shortcomings. The biggest problem is that you can't customize the controls. The default scheme works, but I would have liked to have mapped some stuff to my side mouse buttons.

So yeah, this turned out pretty good. They managed to not fuck things up and make a decent game in the process. Good times.

Haha damn, sorry, Pyro! I think it was during the week I was away and I was too lazy to use the search option :P
