I came into a rather large bonus at work last week, so I decided to take advantage of this deal
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Golden-Eye-007-Bundle-with-Pro-Controller-and-t-shirt-Walmart-Wii-Wii/15237957Which by the way is a hell of a deal, considering the bundle itself sells for 70 elsewhere. And hey, free (size L) shirt!
I enjoyed the original about as much as anyone else did back in the day. Long evenings spent with friends playing multiplayer. I always picked Valentin because in the game his portrait on the character selection screen looked like John Goodman.
Anyhow, I was initially mistaken as to what this game actually was. I originally assumed it was a reskinned version of the original. I was wrong. I am really quite impressed with what has been done here. They brought in one of the original screenwriters for the movie to essentially retool the script to modernize it and make it fit Daniel Craig's Bond persona. You can definitely see the influence CoD and Halo had on this game as well. It feels like a modern FPS and the classic game at the same time, if that makes sense. I like how you have a choice whether to go in guns blazing or utilize stealth (which works to great effect). The mission objectives are what really make this different from other FPS'. You go into a level with an agenda that isn't solely gunning down everyone in your path, and that's fun to me.
Unfortunately the game does have some limitations. The framerate stutters in areas and some things (like walking up to a mirror and looking at yourself) are just pixelated and plain ugly. I have only been using the Classic Controller so far, but I'm probably going to make a switch to wiimote/chuck controls. Apparently that is the best way to play the game.
I've really been on a Wii game tear lately. Mainly because I'm finding a bunch on sale that I've wanted for a while. I went back and forth on this one for a while, but I couldn't pass up that deal. If you liked the first game and enjoy FPS games then you'll do all right by purchasing this. If you couldn't stand the first game this probably isn't going to change your mind.
Glad I bit though. I'm having a blast with it.
