If I don't appear for a while, it's because I massively fucked something up.

Your clock is off, dude.  It's been about 5 hours.

Anyway, everything went fine.  I installed the small drive as SATA master, installed Windows to it, copied over the data I wanted from the beat-up drive, took it out, stuck it back in the box that the new drive came in.  Yay!

So it was a pain in the ass, but I guess it was worth it.  Now I don't have to worry about downtime while I wait for my big drive to get shipped back to me.

EDIT - Oh, but I have a question.  It's been a long time since I've fucked with partitions.  My main drive is now E:, and that's silly since it's the system drive.  Of course it makes little difference in the long run, but can current versions of Windows just switch the drive designation without causing problems, or is it just as infuriating as it always was?  I know next to nothing about current file systems, and I never really used NTFS before XP.

Congratulations.

I've had that problem before que.  It doesn't really make a difference in the end, you just gotta be aware that programs you install are installed in your system drive and you'll be fine.

I didn't really look at changing the system drive designation though.  I'm not sure you can do it.

My guess is no.  You didn't used to be able to, and I don't assume XP is much different.

EDIT - All right, you can't do it.  Looking around you *can* change drive designations from the management thing (right-click My Computer, hit manage), but you can't do it for a boot/system drive.  Oh well.

I'm starting to have trouble with my computer.  It's starting to crash just after I log in, on a file called npfs.sys or ndfs.sys, can't remember which.  I think it's trying to load my AV scanner at the time, which obviously would need access to the file system.

I think it's my sister's fault.  She comes over and just powers down my computer by holding in the power button.  She's been doing this all summer.  I think it finally is starting to result in some corrupting.  I'm wondering if I maybe do a system restore to like a week ago if that will fix the problem.

I would never have thought to try using a system restore to undo corruption.  Scans haven't been able to fix the problem?

If it's file corruption, a file system check won't do anything.  I have to figure out a way to restore the file to it's non-corrupt state.

System restore has saved my ass several times.  I've also cured problems with my daughter's laptop that way.  As much badmouthing as system restore gets, it really does work as a safety net.

Yeah, I was going to try that, and then do a chkdsk /f /s for good measure, but I don't know how far back to go in my restore.

Of course, but I don't know for sure when the problem began occurring.  My sister has been doing this to my computer all summer.  It's impossible for me to know exactly when the file became corrupt.  I suppose I'll go back about a week though.
