La-Mulana remake released on PC!
« on: Sunday, December 25, 2011, 07:37:45 PM »
It's here! $15, DRM free! Wee!

Original post:
Hooray!

Started as a freeware PC game that got updated and released on WiiWare, much like Cave Story. La-Mulana was released in Japan back in July and was also submitted to Nintendo for NA/EU release but for whatever reason Nintendo has not released it. They said that it will still release on the Wii, but in the mean time they are working on a PC release. I imagine this is so they can release something and make some money off it. It worked for Cave Story+.

Oooh...if this hit an indie bundle....

Minor update. Wii version STILL not released. What the hell is NoA doing, their release schedule is so screwed up. I mean they are just now getting around to releasing Pikmin 2 Wii after its been out for 2 years in Europe. Ok...whatever.

Anyway, sounds like the PC version is almost complete. Awesome news, very much looking forward to this.

Well good thing the PC version is coming, they just announced on twitter that the NA and Euro WiiWare releases have been canceled. Pretty sad that the game is done, complete, ready to go, but Nintendo is just sitting on it and there is nothing they could do.

What the fuck? How do you pay someone to make a game and then you just don't use it? What the hell is up with Nintendo lately? Some dumb fucking decisions.

It seems like this is a big mess. Nicalis is/was publishing, they say its not their fault that the game either didnt pass cert or something. They basically blame the developer Nigoro for not doing the game right. I guess they added some DLC stuff to the NA/EU version and it was keeping them from getting the ok? I dunno, theres a lot of he said/she said going on complicated by everything being translated from Japanese.

Nigoro is self-publishing the PC version so hopefully there wont be a crazy long delay once its done.

Hope something gets worked out with that. And hope the PC version ends up doing well.

I don't know if this has been posted about here or you're referring to it as well, but Nintendo just denied The Binding of Isaac for the 3ds.

I can see that. I mean, not exactly what you'd call family-friendly. But that wasn't what I was referring to, no.

Yeah, fair enough but I kinda thought Nintendo had given up a bit on only allowing family friendly games on their consoles.  I mean, Darksiders 2 is a Wii U launch title, they've had a few Silent Hill games on their consoles, and there's been a couple of pretty violent and gory Wii games.  I guess the religious aspect is something different, but Darksiders could be questionable in that case...and maybe Silent Hill 2.  It's also something that could be glossed over pretty easily.

Just seems weird.

I dunno, I see Binding of Isaac as sort of more than all those. It's sort of irreverent and creepy and there's shit and piss in a cartoon environment that isn't really amusing but sort of creepy instead. Those other games feel like they treat things with a general respect and seriousness of some kind. Isaac just kind of hangs out there.

Oh yeah.  Thinking about it now, Isaac has quite a bit more going on than I really notice while playing - blood, and the shit and piss you mention. Seriously, what's up with all the shit everywhere?

Haha, I don't know exactly. Side effect of the twisted sense of humor combined with the premise, I guess. It's a little much if you actually sit and think about it. Thankfully the game is so fun you end up mostly not doing that.

Man. I wish there could be a DS/iOS version of it. One of those things I'd like to play but rarely sit down to the PC to fiddle with.

Dumbfoundingly dumb.  And as a result, they lost money last year for the first time I can remember, and a lot of it.  Serves them right.

I imagine we'll get one or the other eventually.  I've gotten back into it a bit lately, but sadly there's no Steam Cloud support so I have to unlock everything again (Which is half the fun).  It's flash based, so I imagine it'd be easy to port into an iOS ap (Even though flash isn't supported I imagine that there are tools out there to make this happen easier than a re-write.). Would Apple allow it?

Coming July 13th!

It'll be sold on a new site called Playism, which I guess isn't really new but its not for English speakers. The apparently specialize in indie games and bringing them to Japan, and now they are going to start their English site and bring Japanese indie games to us. One of their dudes posted on neogaf about La-Mulana. $14.99 and DRM-free. He said they want to go DRM-free for all their games if they can but it will eventually be down to the developers. But hell, I'm happy!

Get it here!

Or read this review.
Quote
La-Mulana is an excellent, complex, involved and difficult game. If you’re willing to try something with a little more challenge than most, it’s an easy recommendation. It’s polished and deep, and there’s some genuinely intelligent puzzling mixed in with the running, jumping and whipping bats out of the air. You actually need to think, read and act like an archaeologist at times. While there are some sticking points, there’s plenty of guides available out there, and if you’ve ever enjoyed Metroid, Castlevania: SOTN or Dark Souls then this is very much in the spirit of all three. At the asking price of $15, and with Playism’s excellent translation, it’s a must-have.

Damn it. There's a reason I haven't been visiting lately. You making me want to play games I don't have time to play is probably it.

I really want this...

Bought it, played some, love it. Its a bit easier to get started in this version compared to the freeware original. They at least sort of point you in the right direction, and the added visual detail points out "this is a thing" more than a couple pixels that look like the rest of the level did.

How did I not realize this was a Metroidvania game? I should have another $15 around here somewhere.

Edit: Pug must have missed my gushing about Binding of Isaac last year. I still think that was my favorite game from 2011.

Took out my first boss. He wasn't too hard, and I got a new weapon out of it. Actually I had to beat him twice since I was an idiot and got myself killed before I could save.

I also wandered into a new area I hadn't seen before. Found a shop and bought a helmet! The helmet stops waterfalls from pushing you down, so now I can go explore that one water zone. It helps to bulk up your money when you can. You never know when you'll find a new shop thats selling something you may want.
