I ran
The Spartan Race today. It was a 7km (just over 4 miles) obstacle course going through the woods a couple of hours north of Toronto. I think I did pretty well as I finished about 10-15 minutes after the people I went with and they run marathons for fun. The scoreboards aren't up yet but there were about 7000 people running it so I'm quite curious to see where I stand.
The obstacles were pretty mixed in difficulty. The easier ones consisted of crawling through tubes, up rope ladders, jumping over walls, balancing acts and other things like that. The harder ones involve climbing up ropes (haven't done that since middle school) and going up hill with sandbags and other strength related things. Halfway through we had to go through about a 30 metre swamp of mud that went about chest high. In itself it wasn't so bad but it left you completely soaked for the rest of the race and all the mud on your shoes really weighs you down.
The ending was the absolute worst; spectators fill the finishing area so naturally they have to put on a show. One part involved crawling through a pit of ice that's laced with barbed wire just a few inches higher. You need to push the ice out of your way to make a path but at the same time people beside you are pushing ice into your direction so that you can't get through. There was absolutely no clearance so your clothes end up getting shredded. I got a nice cut on my head from the wire which led to me doing the last 100 metres of the race covered in blood which the crowd seemed to enjoy. There's a picture that I can post but I think I might be breaking some laws by posting a sweaty 12 year old boy.
