« on: Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 04:28:30 PM »
Yay!

Japanese title was Yakuza: Of the End, or at least we are assuming this new trademark is for the US version. Its Yakuza, with zombies. WANT.

haha, I love this quote from one of the official dudes in the comments.
Quote
The Hostess section is in place just like in previous titles – you can meet hostesses, get their card, and request them on future visits.

However, there’s also a new addition to the way some Hostesses work – which now allows you to take them on a date through the streets of Tokyo – a date filled with shotguns, zombies, and a whole lot of love. : )

Also mentioned is a release date of March 2012.

I was initially turned off by all the negative reviews, but after watching some gameplay vids I think I'll probably end up grabbing it.  The more Goro Majima the better!

So after the initial test run I made, this got put on the backburner so Kman and I could play Vanquish. Since that was done....I bought Gran Turismo 5. Well I'm not as into cars as I am Yakuza so after doing some races I decided now was a good time to dig into Dead Souls.

So if you looked at the reviews, you know the faults of the game. I guess the main one would be how it controls. Its a 3rd person shooter but it is not locked over the shoulder, it doesn't play like Gears. It controls...like Yakuza. Only instead of running around and getting into random fights, you run around with a gun and can blast zombies. You can just blind fire which will auto target zombies as you're moving and with a strong gun you can kill them in one shot doing this. Pulling the left trigger will pull you into a close up 3rd person aiming mode. With some skill upgrades it will auto-assist you in aiming for the heads of zombies, so its handy. I'm constantly switching in and out of this. The thing that took the most to get used to is in that view the left stick moves the view, where every other shooter ever has the right stick change the view. So its kind of odd until you get used to it.

Other than that...not many complaints from me. Tons of zombies, lots of weapons. You can "liberate" the stores that are caught inside the quarantine zone and make use of their services. Which is funny going into an ice cream shop in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The quarantine zone grows as the game goes on. At first its just one part of the city thats been taken over and you can run around freely in the rest of the city. And no one stops you to pick a fight! The city gets harder to navigate as the quarantine grows making it pretty maze-like.

One feature thats kind of cool...and kind of not, but totally optional, is the underground. They kind of built a roguelike into the game in the form of a haunted sewer. The maps are random and get tougher as you go down. Its dark so you need a flashlight, and a supply of extra batteries depending on how far down you're going. And ammo, if you need it. I always pack a powerful pistol (infinite ammo for pistols) to keep space open to pick up stuff. Anyway, its sort of fun to just go blast zombies, but the rooms and hallways all look the same and it can take a while the deeper you go. Theres a questline pushing you to go deeper...but man, its going to be hard for me to want to go through all that.

Anyway, Im enjoying it quite a bit. Will report more later.
