Story

Putting myself through the arduous trek through the floor of the adult expo I did a quick straw poll on, the virtues of HD DVD versus Blu-ray, and the answer from a dozen companies, big and small, including Pink Visual and Bangbros editor-in-chief, is going into a single direction: HD DVD is the preferred format. Period.

Porn industry chooses HD DVD. Blu-ray is teh doooomed!

I have no idea who is going to win.  No one has an edge now, but I've heard "Available on DVD and Blu-Ray disc" more than I've heard "Available on DVD and HD-DVD."  In fact, I'm not sure I've ever heard the latter.

Yeah, I've heard the same as scott on this.  But the porn thing is not only funny, it's interesting.  I wonder why they made that choice.

This is why.

The Digital Playgrounds company (Pirates porno! wee!) was going to go all blu-ray. They find out after talking to many many places about getting their discs pressed, none of the manufacturers would do it for them. It seems Sony doesn't want porn on blu-ray, and the manufacturers would lose their license.

In contrast, a lot of DVD places can make few changes and also print HD DVDs, so theres no shortage of places to press the discs.

Its Sony shooting themselves in the foot again.

Huh.  Interesting.  I was going to say that it must be a thing where Sony doesn't want trashy video on their disks, but I thought... would they do that?  I guess they would.  I find it hard to fault them for it, but it does seem like a lousy business decision.

I'm really surprised Sony hasn't changed their stance on this.  People say this was one of the major reasons Beta didn't catch on and VHS thrived.

So the news is good.  In its constant bid to own everything, Sony is going to turn off enough independents to assure its own failure in the HD-disc market.  Awesome.

The porn industry is billions of dollars worth of business apparently.  Since they're supporting HD-DVD, HD-DVD may really become the HD format winner.
