THQ Confirms Another Red Faction Game
Because blowing up a wall is cooler than finding a key card.
By Patrick Klepek, 02/02/2007
For Volition, working on the GTA-inspired Saints Row had them running as far from the first-person-shooter genre as possible, but they're being tempted back to the table, it seems. Gamasutra listened in on a THQ financial call, where CEO Brian Farrell revealed the publisher's working with Volition on a next-generation installment of the series.

Red Faction's hook was "Geo Mod" technology, the ability to blast away most any part of the environment that was in your path. Didn't want to search for a key card? Blow a hold in the wall instead. The sequel wasn't so hot, but the original concept was mind blowing for its time, and the added power of the latest round of consoles could really prove beneficial for a new Red Faction.

Volition's actually located not too far from me. Who knows why they decided to plan themselves in the middle of the midwest and near a college town, but with the police focused on arresting drunk frat kids, a little breaking and entering wouldn't be completely out of the question...

Meanwhile, GameSpot states "bogus" on this one.....

THQ prepping new Red Faction?

Source: A report on trade site Gamasutra, citing a THQ quarterly conference call as its source.

What we heard: There were a lot of interesting tidbits coming out of THQ's quarterly conference call this morning. The company confirmed that it would be making WWE games on the Wii and DS in addition to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. It talked about the cost of porting a PS3 game to the Xbox 360. It admitted it was planning its release schedule around Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV so as not to go head-to-head with those games for the same audience. It mentioned for the first time the actual name of its announced Stuntman sequel: Stuntman Ignition.

And according to Gamasutra, it also confirmed that it was going to release a new Red Faction game in its next fiscal year (April 2007 through March 2008 for those keeping track). Such a move would certainly be in keeping with the company's plan to increase the amount of revenue derived from intellectual properties it already owns, as opposed to pricey licenses like SpongeBob and WWE. THQ CEO Brian Farrell even told analysts in the call, "Our fiscal 2008 growth will be driven primarily by increased sales of proven owned intellectual properties, a cornerstone of our strategy."

Farrell also talked about original franchises in the company's longer-term plans.

"When you think about fiscal 2009 and beyond, there are three important takeaways we would like to leave you with," Farrell told analysts. "One, THQ has established six owned franchises which have reached the million-unit mark and our pipeline is growing. Two, our long-term license franchises, the WWE, Pixar, and Nickelodeon, have each shipped 30 million units. And three, we are exploiting new revenue opportunities such as microtransactions and in-game advertising and we continue to expand our global footprint."

After Farrell had wrapped up the presentation portion of the call, the lines were opened for analysts to ask questions. A Merrill Lynch analyst asked Farrell to "list out the six franchise brands you referred to." Farrell responded by mentioning Saints Row, Stuntman, Juiced, Destroy All Humans!, MX, "and my favorite, Red Faction."

Clearly THQ has not forgotten Red Faction. And with its increased emphasis on original IPs, a return to the series is not outside of the realm of possibility. However, nowhere in the call did the publisher actually say that it was developing games for all of its six established franchises, nor did anyone confirm there was a new Red Faction game in development.

The official story: A THQ representative chose not to comment, but referred us to a transcript of the conference call.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus.

I liked the whole "Geo-Mod" thing -- you know, where you blow up walls and stuff.

Other than that, the game was just okay....

It's over there, being not made by Volition... probably because they didn't make the first one?

Red Faction 1 I really enjoyed. It had some really cool ideas.

Red Faction 2, I think I'm the only guy who did actually play it! When you load up the game It's pretty obvious that it's a port from the Xbox; the controls, the texture quality, and the teen-friendly content.

The only things it maintained from the original RF were the Geo-Mod™ Engine, vehicles, and the whole "fight the power" revolution thing. The story is completely unrelated.

Although RF2 technically had better graphics (better models, better effects) and an updated version of Geo-Mod, RF1 still looks better mainly because of how lo-res the textures are in RF2. RF2 just looks dusty to me, with a little too much "brown" in the colour scheme. Overall, RF2 felt much less refined than the original, and more like a rushed "let's make some console money" project.

I played Red Faction on the PS2.  It was okay.  The GeoMod thing had me really excited and it was kind of new for its time.  But it's wasn't a big influence on gameplay and even gone in the latter half of the game as the environments became indestructible.  I don't know if I'd call it a gimmick or not, but it wasn't as exciting and revolutionary as I expected (especially since there was a hard limit to the destruction you could cause in a level).

I never played Red Faction 2.  RF1 just wasn't good enough to get me interested in the sequel.

Same here. I was hoping it would do more than it actually did.

When you did get the chance to use it, it was pretty damn cool. :)

Very true.

In Red Faction 1, the Geo-Mod was cool, but the novelty wore off about half-way through the game. I was really into the gameplay. I especially loved using the pistol! Just walk into an office, headshot, headshot, headshot, clear. Maybe I'm easily amused, but it was one of the few games where I simply enjoyed shooting things or blowing them up ;D
