audio problems
« on: Thursday, February 08, 2007, 07:03:11 PM »
so after i got a relatively new computer (for me at least) i found out that there is no sound at all.

the case has top mic and headphone jacks and back audio jacks as well, but the headphone jacks on the front or back don't work. the mic works fine, but only on the back.

now the weird part is that whenever i plug in my headphones, the computer detects it and a menu pops up asking me what i plugged into the green jack. still, i don't get any sound. ive got this crappy soundmax ac97 integrated audio and the soundmax menu works fine, but it doesnt seem to be a driver issue since windows detects the drivers and everything seems to functioning alright. i tried disconnecting a few cables that link to the front jacks on my asus motherboard, but still no sound.

should i go and buy a pci soundcard or is there something im missing?

I've had no problems with AC97 integrated sound.  In fact, it's pretty good.  Looks to me like you might have a hardware issue.  A PCI sound card would most likely work, but it won't tell you what's wrong with your current setup.  You'd simply bypass the whole issue (which may be the easiest thing to do).

I also have AC97 integrated stuff and it works pretty good for me.  No real issues with it except possibly in Oblivion, and it may not be the sound's fault at all.
