*sigh*
« on: Sunday, February 18, 2007, 03:21:45 PM »
I just got done talking to my mother. My brother is in the hospital, but hes fine as they are keeping him sedated. I dont know if any of you remember but my brother has paranoid schizophrenia. During the fall of last year he moved in with my other brother. Now from what my mother told me he stopped taking his medication for 2 months so his mental state slowly deteriorated until basically he has full blown delusions and gets out of control. You can barely communicate with him at this point. Luckily my older brother was seeing it coming so they were able to keep him from going anywhere. Thats what I worry about, last time he was driving while having an episode and an officer pulled him over for driving recklessly, though we lucked out that time too as the officer was kind enough to drive him home without so much as a ticket after we explained his situation. So my mom took him to the hospital because he was getting too wild, they will most likely keep him sedated for a couple days until his medication starts helping him again. I would drive over there but I honestly can't stomach seeing him like that, it tears me up. So yea, now I'm just depressed.

Why did he stop taking his meds?  It seems to be a really common thing with schizophrenics.  They know they need it, but then when they take it they feel better so they stop.  Or something.  Really sucks, dude... I hope everything turns out okay.  I'm here if you need to talk or anything.

Yea, he was getting tired of the side effects so he felt he wanted to try without it to see if he still could function normally. I knew this was coming when he moved out of my moms house because she can monitor him better than my brother can.

Sorry, man.  As crosses to bear go, that's a heavy one, for all concerned.  I hope your brother gets better soon.

My prayers go out to your brother. That's a tough situation to be in.

All the best to you and your family. I hope your brother gets better soon.

As for why they stop taking it, I guess they just want to think they have gotten well enough not to need it.

That's really horrible, but at least he didn't hurt himself.   Do you think he's going to be back at your brother's place or with your mom when he gets out?

Why did he stop taking his meds?  It seems to be a really common thing with schizophrenics.
Using a specific, clinical definition of addiction, it is fair to say that addictive drugs are precisely those that trigger the release of dopamine. Nicotine, cocaine, opioids, barbituates, amphetamines, diazepine, alcohol, and all pharmacologically related compounds are addictive. Drugs which don't affect the dopamine system aren't addictive in nearly the same sense: cannabis, THC and most hallucinogens, MDMA, and many others, for instance.

Antipsychotic drugs are basically the polar opposite of addictive drugs. Most all of them are dopamine antagonists, meaning they suppress dopamine function. As you might expect, this makes them singularly unpleasant.

Behaviorism is a branch of psychology that considers only the overall pattern of responses of humans/animals. It might seem like an extreme way to characterize humans, but I justify it (to myself at least) thus: Behaviorism does not describe individual choices, but it does describe the overall pattern of choices an individual will make. And it works exceedingly well - we can calculate, with surprising accuracy, what virtually any small group of individuals (and to a lesser extent, even particular individuals) will do in a given situation. It works for rats in cages pressing levers for food rewards, and also for predicting property crime based on the price and purity of meth or heroin. (As an aside, enforcement efforts that increase the price of the drug have the effect of dramatically increasing the total profits of drug suppliers and also the amount of property crime that occurs when addicts try to support their habit...)

Antipsychotics also affect this behavioral-reward pathway, but in the opposite direction. Even when patients rationally understand that the medicine is what keeps them together and that they're worse off without it, that behavioral drive seems to kick in eventually. The experience is perhaps analogous to continually quitting smoking. And it's not just patients with schizophrenia - the self-same drugs are commonly used in bipolar disorder (called "mood stabilizers") and epilepsy or other seizure disorders (called antimimetics or antiepileptics), and regardless of the disorder there are similar problems with compliance.

Well I just got done talking to my older brother and he explained his side of things. Right now my little brother is at a mental hospital near where my mom works. My mom and older brother are gonna see him tomorrow. Though I'm a little concerned with what my older brother told me. For some reason he was saying that Nick (little brother) is really mad with our mom, that he blames her for everything and what not. It sounds ludicrous since we couldnt ask for better parents but Im sure he's still out of it. I just get concerned about how my mom takes it since she is prone to depression which in turn drives me in a stress depressive nightmare since I worry about her relapsing, though I know shes strong enough, it still sits in my head.

Pyro you have to be strong for your mom. I think you should talk to her before she talks to him and give her a pep talk. She should know that it isn't your brother talking in a proper state of mind.

Yeah, any reminder of that would surely do her good.  And remind her that things will be okay, they just suck right at the moment.  Just gotta' get through it to the other side.

Well my mom and older brother saw him today. He's much more together again. If things keep going on that track then he may actually be out by tomorrow or maybe a couple more days at the most.

Gpw: He'll likely be going back to stay at my brothers place. He'll be more on top of it, but its still gets hard to convince him how necessary his medication is. He sometimes gets a little snappy when he feels like he's being pampered.
