Just hit the stop button next time...

BOMB SQUAD!

Quote
• CD players hidden under church pews blared foul language during Mass
• Staff took the CD players to the basement and called police
• Bomb squad detonated two of the three devices
• Police are keeping third CD player to test for fingerprints or DNA

The prank itself isnt that funny, but the fact that the church people found the CD players, moved them to the basement just fine, and still the bomb squad blew two of them up is just hilarious.

I don't find it that funny. Did they overreact to a tape recorder? Quite possibly. But lets not forget the fact that there are people out there who would like to blow up a Catholic church. And anyone sick enough to play pornographic tape recordings during a church ceremony may be sick enough to plant a bomb in a church.

In light of this and the recent Mooninite conquest of Boston, I think we have finally reached the highest stage of national paranoia. I await the day when every physical object found slightly out-of-place yields interrogations and arrests by the Department of Homeland Security.

"But what if the terrorists laced that paperclip with anthrax!!!!!!!"

I'm with Ghandi on this one.  The Boston thing was ridiculous, but I think they had every right to treat this more seriously.  Maybe they were being overly cautious, but at least in this circumstance the caution was more justified.

So this incident would be another example of the recent trend of terrorists attracting as much attention as possible to their hidden explosive devices?

Maybe I'm just an asshole, but I think it would be hilarious if someone planted a bunch of "suspicious devices" around a school and - while the entire police force was looking the other way - vandalized a bunch of police stations.

Firstly, you don't have to be a "terrorist" to blow something up, and there are plenty of fucked up individuals out there who know how to make explosives.  And these days, everybody's got a bone to pick with everybody else.  If you're going to go to all the trouble of putting obscene audio recordings in a church, why is it so far fetched that you might want to cause further damage?  Obviously the fact that they moved the things would be an indication they weren't dangerous, but it still seems a lot more logical than the Boston thing.  Secondly, I don't think that would be particularly funny.  You probably wouldn't either if you knew any cops.

People's belief to believe the sensational hype surrounding everything terrorist in the media is no reason to disregard the fact that this could have been something more. What kind of sick individual gets a kick out of this sort of thing? How far are they willing to go? Maybe this was an overreaction in this case. But what if it had been a bomb? Furthermore, what if the bomb squad hadn't detonated it, thinking it was merely a tape recorder, and it went off killing people? Some people may laugh at the measures taken in these circumstances but even if there is the 1 in a million chance that this thing could be a bomb and kill someone, I support the steps taken.

Maybe I'm just an asshole, but I think it would be hilarious if someone planted a bunch of "suspicious devices" around a school and - while the entire police force was looking the other way - vandalized a bunch of police stations.

I fail to see the humor in this. I've been fucked over by the police a couple of times in my life, but that doesn't mean that they aren't keeping the crackheads and rapists off the streets.

I think detonating the players was most definitely an overreacting, but I found that horrible. People go to church for peace and I am sure kids go there. That's not funny.

Everyone is pretty quick to blame the police in these kinds of things, but to be fair it's not really their fault they have to be so careful, it starts much higher up.
