Notes about the OW.net forums
« on: Monday, September 11, 2006, 04:39:13 AM »
 • Max avatar size - 100x100 px
 • Max image size - 1024x768 px.  You can post larger images, but they will be contained in their own scrolling box.
 • Spoiler tags - No longer is it necessary to post "*** SPOILERS ***" with a bunch of whitespace.  Use the spoiler tag feature!  Just contain the part of the post that is a spoiler in tags:

• Search - It works!
 • Quotes - The board automatically strips out only the most recent quote when you push the quote button, so you don't get those posts that have like 9 quotes nested inside one another.
 • AJAX editing - You no longer have to load a new window to edit posts.  Just push the little paper and pencil icon to the right of your post, and it will change to a window where you can edit the post text.  Push save to return to the regular view, with the changes in place.
 • RSS feed - If you are using Firefox, you should see an RSS icon in the right side of the address bar.  You can create a RSS bookmark, or use another RSS reader.  Basically it's the five newest posts on the forum.
 • Number of saved private messages - The more posts you make, the more private messages you are allowed to keep as you move up in posting groups.  This is a way to reward our long-term members and save database space with shorter-term members.
 • Private message labels - You can create lables for private messages and organize them into groups that way, which can be handy.

More to come.

Just found something out. If you are replying to a thread, and someone else adds a new reply before you get yours in, it will tell you when you hit send, and refresh your reply page with the new reply. Kinda neat.

Yeah, I saw that earlier.  Not sure how useful it really is, but it is definately a... um... feature.

I thought that was pretty neat.

That already saved me once from having to edit a post.  Was replying to Scott, a new post went up in the meantime, and the board warned me before accepting my post.  So I added "To Scott:" at the top.  That is useful.

You can enable the Quick Reply function in your profile. It's all I ever used at TME so I'm happy it's still an option here.

Oh, it was. The Default is "show, off by default" I switched it to on by default so it's always open. Before I looked in the settings I didn't realize the blue bar at the bottom was to be clicked for Quick Reply to come up.

Ah.  Gotcha.  Yeah, the original default from a fresh install of the forum is no quick reply at all. Kind of lame, considering the "show, off by default" setting is very unobtrusive whilst still useful.

The Statistics feature is awesome. There's just something about useless information on my posting patterns I love so much.
