The development costs of next-generation games and consoles are reaching movielike levels, and gaming companies are under pressure to maintain their bottom line. But even with the price levels we've become used to, Sony's £425 ($825 US) has caused some shock waves.

The problem is that £425 is a lot of money. If you throw in a couple of games, you're looking at more than £500, which psychologically at least seems a barrier to purchase. While it has the benefits of Blu-ray (if it takes hold) and, later, the PlayStation Home environment, are those really enough to persuade gamers to part with stacks of cash?

That seems to be where I lost much faith in the PS3. Really what were they thinking? Maybe they plan to drop the price a month after release. I think they realize that some people will pay anything so perhaps they are going for an experiment? $800 for a PS3 is laughable.

A month after release? That never happens and boy if it did it would piss all those who bought one at release right off!  :P
But from what I hear there's so few units supplied by Sony at release they sell out super fast, it'll probably take a month for new stock to arrive. In 3 days the console is released here it'll be interesting to see if the stores still have stock in a week or 2. Not to say anything more about how f'ing expensive it is. Meanwhile the 360 is releasing its HD drive (with King King HD DVD) and they've got a GoW console package deal thing happening now too, I think Sony has an up hill battle here should be fun to watch.

Yea maybe not a month hehe. :P

But I think the European customers have a right to feel cheated when it is costing much less in the USA.

Wow, it seems all the people associated with Gamespot have become complete fucking morons.  I couldn't possibly disagree more with most of what was said.  Virtually none of those things would convince me to drop a huge wad of cash on a PS3 in even the least bit, and I fail to see why they would change anybody's mind.  None of those things would be worth the price tag.  The *only* thing that could change my mind at this point would be a *significant number* of tantalizing exclusives (God of War III?  Oh my yes) and a *huge* price drop.  I plain can't afford the console, period.  There's just nothing else that can be said.  I couldn't afford it if I wanted to.  I couldn't afford it if I stopped eating real food for two months.  There's just no physical way it's ever going to happen.  So, yeah, without a giant-ass price drop, they can pretty much forget about my business for eternity, which is going to make me really sad when I can't play God of War III, but I have no idea what they expect of people.  I've purchased every major gaming console since the SNES barring a few of the more obscure ones, and when *I* can't find a way to justify the cost of a machine, you can pretty much guarantee you've fucked yourself.

Thank you! I don't know why so many of you defend GS, they're a sub par gaming site. I realized what they were spouting was pure shit when they said this little diddy:

Quote
If the Xbox 360 and Gears of War didn't exist, the PlayStation 3 would be sold out everywhere; thus, we would all be happily playing Resistance: Fall of Man and marveling over the sweat in Fight Night Round 3

Not only is that completely untrue, but its a pretty big "what if", sounds like GS is making up excuses and fantasies for the PS3.

I already had that in my clipboard when I saw your post, so I pasted it anyway.  Yeah, that's where I assumed the rest of the artcle would be bullshit.  I have yet to read it.  So here I go . . .

Edit:  I must agree with Que, and my initial impression.  Very little of what they said would make me consider changing my mind about the PS3.  In fact, only the part about reconsidering the price was a bullseye.  The price is a complete barrier for me at this time, even if the system had a ton of worthwile games (which it clearly does not).

I likewise agree with Que.  They didn't even mention a Team Ico game....and we all know that's what sells systems....

haha that's what I was thinking. The only reason anyone would buy a PS3 is... *drum roll*.... GAMES!!

Also GPW in terms of editorials they aren't very good, but really who is? PC Gamer is still the best despite some issues. IGN still write like blind retarded chimpanzees. Gamespot are very good at writing, but lack a bit of heart. I think their reviews are spot on though.

Generally I like GSpot, so don't feel like I'm ragging on them in general.  I just happen to think this particular feature was a load of horseshit.  GSpot is my main game site generally, and usually there isn't quite this much abundant idiocy.  It's far above most of the alternatives, at any rate.

I hate GS reviews, I understand that certain people don't like certain types of game; but if you're a reviewer you should be partial. I hate that whole "tilt" thing, its just thrown in so the reviewer can change the score. If you want to see what a reviewer really thinks of a game, just check out what the tilt is.

I enjoy reading IGN a lot more than GS, I don't think they're chimps at all. I'll admit that they can sometimes get long winded, go off on a tangent or try way to hard to be funny (and fail), but compared to GS articles they're delightful. Forget not having heart, GS writings have no soul either. Its like they programmed robots to write reviews using a writing formula or algorithm.

Anyways, a lot of people think GS reviews are great because they're strict. I personally find them nitpicky and whiny...and inconsistent.

I enjoy reading IGN

I think that comment pretty much speaks for itself.  Sorry, mate, but you just lost all your credibility in an argument about writing.  IGN is about the biggest collection of idiots to ever gather since idiots began gathering.  Of all the people who don't deserve to do what they do, they rank right up at the top.  I've seen sixth graders who could write with more clarity and professionalism, not to mention with better spelling and grammar.

To be honest I find IGN's writers to have a better talent for being entertaining. In that sense I do agree with Nicklone. Gamespot's reviews are like written by cold hearted robots, and there seems to be little warmth.

However I'd still read a gamespot review any day of the week because they are focused, well written and informative.

A typical IGN review lasts five to seven pages. Who the fuck wants to read a review that long? Plus they are full of spelling and grammatical errors, which even someone like me notices. Gamespot always seems to cover the same points with more detail in half that space. How is that even possible?

Meh, I read both, but generally don't care or prefer one over the other.

IGN can be long in the tooth, but I like them because they're not so critical of the little things and dock points for things that they feel should be in the game. They won't don't points for a game that doesn't have multiplayer even if they feel that it should. IGN judges the game itself and doesn't (for lack of a better word) make up reasons to hate any game.

Also, when previewing a game, GS will say everything is great with the game, but when the review comes out (and little to no changes are made to the game) they rip it apart. When IGN previews a game and says its good so far or bad so far, the review reflects the last preview they had ( when little to no changes are made to the game).
