Gates Hints At New Xbox Control System

Quote
He ended his comments by saying, “And as we get natural input, that will cause a change... Software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you’re just going to pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it.”

As the similarities behind his concept and that of the Wii were pointed out, Gates responded: “No, that’s not it. You can’t pick up your tennis racket. And swing it.”

“You can’t sit there with your friends and do those natural things. That’s a 3D positional device. This is video recognition,” he added.

Gates: So you swing your bat or tennis racket around, and those same actions happen in the game!
Everyone: So, pretty much what the Wii is doing.
Gates: NO! This is different! You can use a REAL bat and tennis racket!
Everyone: Why the fuck would I want to swing a real baseball bat around in my living room?

Neat idea, but yeah how can this work realistically?  Are you going to throw a football or kick a soccer ball at your TV?

Does anyone remember those motion-sensitive arcade machines? There was "Police 24/7" where you stood on an area and any movements you made made duck for cover etc.

There was also the Tekken 3 arcade machine with a big hexagon on the ground, you step in it and punch/kick as you please. Of course the special moves were a little difficult.

Fun stuff for a while.

See, this is what I love about Nintendo. Nobody would even think of an idea like this if Nintendo didn't innovate the market to begin with, with the Wii. Granted, this idea is stupid and fuck Microsoft +2, but still.

OK, so now instead of needing, oh, a chair and a desk, I need a frigging gym to play my videogames.  I also need to be young and athletic enough to use that gym to train for the videogame.  Wow!  What progress!

I loved that arcade game Police 911.  Had tons of fun with it and when it was brand new, a lot of people would be like 'wtf' when you were playing it.
