Hannibal Rising -- what is up w/ prequels becoming a growing trend???
« on: Wednesday, January 24, 2007, 08:36:21 PM »
Anyone seen the trailer for this movie yet???

Yeah, another prequel here w/ this movie.
Red Dragon was a prequel to Silence and Hannibal.
So, we got a prequel to a prequel here, eh? ;)

It seems like lately, especially since the Star Wars prequels and Batman Begins w/ its success -- critically and sale-wise -- prequels have just been popping up like crazy.

There was that Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, a horrible prequel to the horrible TCM remake.

Exorcist even had a prequel -- Exorcist: The Beginning.

Even Dumb and Dumber had a prequel.........Looked horrible....

I wonder what will be the next movie to have a prequel.....Seems to be a growing trend....

I would like to see this movie, I loved the Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal.  Red Dragon was kinda meh.

I thought Hannibal was one of the worst pieces of shit I ever watched.  I enjoyed Red Dragon to some degree, and the first is pretty cool.  This looks really horrible to me, though.  I just can't see the lead guy working.  He looks awful to me.

Well, in Red Dragon's defence it was actually the first book in the series and the movie you're speaking of is actually a remake of the first Red Dragon (which may or may not have had a different name but had entirely different actors from the rest of the series).

Anyways, I'll probably see this, but I think Thomas Harris is kind of a hack, so my expectations will be pretty low.  Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs were pretty good, but Hannibal (the book at least) was pretty brutal...especially towords the end.

The first 'Red Dragon' movie was called Manhunter.  The remake was called Red Dragon.  I never saw the original, but I did see the remake and I thought it was pretty good.  Hannibal was pretty crappy.

Hannibal felt more like it was all about the shock value when compared to the other Hannibal Lecter movies.

Apparently Gaspard Ulliel will be playing the young Hannibal Lecter.

Hannibal Rising looks interesting, I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

Oooh, I knew he was familiar....he was in A Very Long Engagement.

I liked the movie, but it wasn't that great. It disappointmented it; especially w/ all the buzz that did surround it from the critics.

So did anyone see this?  It's getting shitty reviews, but I like the character so I'm still undecided whether or not to see this.  Chances are I'm not going to see this in theatres though.

It looks horrendous to me.  I wouldn't see it if you paid me.  Others have been more optimistic, but it doesn't seem to be doing well.

I didn't see this thread before and wanted to post about it. Yes it looks uninviting.

This origin story thing is becoming too trendy.

Well Thomas Harris wrote the prequel novel for this movie anyway, but yea, it doesn't look very good at all.

Well he wrote it at the insistence of the producer. Apparently they got tons of letters and thought there was a good market for this.

And he adapted the screenplay as well, which might explain why it sucks so bad.  I don't care what anyone says, the guy is a bad writer.

haha I wanted to say that earlier, but thought against it. But I do think he is a bad writer as well.

I saw this last night.

It's way too slow for its own good. Not very good pacing at all.
Bad pacing.

That's really the biggest problem w/ this movie.
And a very big problem it is....

I saw Hannibal but never read it so maybe ippi could comment on what I've been told that the ending was changed for the film?? Any I didn't this this movie was as smart as the two before it, but there's still things about it I liked.

I might see this new movie on TV in 3 years time.
By the way D Batman Begins is more of a reboot than a prequal.

I finally saw this movie.  Gotta say that overall it's fairly disappointing.  Gong Li is a great actress though, but the rest of the movie is pretty dull and uninteresting.

What's the deal with the guy they casted for this?  I haven't seen the movie but every preview I've seen has made him look like the biggest tool in the universe.  Was he as bad as he appeared to be?  Because he looked truly horrendous.

Gaspard had his moments.

He was better in A Very Long Engagement, to say the least.
