Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 drops by $167
« on: Friday, July 20, 2007, 07:31:50 PM »
It's now $299.  That's huge.  According to Tom's Hardware, it's twice as fast in some situations in comparison to my Intel Core 2 Duo E6400.

I think I'll pick it up and sell my Duo.

Its getting about time for me to upgrade it seem. Core 2 Quad, a DX10 card, 2GB of RAM (maybe more depending on price)....yeah, that'd be pretty sweet.

Yeah DDR2 prices are really cheap now.  I bought my original 2GB of RAM for $180 after a $20 rebate, and the same exact RAM (another 2GB) was listed for $90 after a $40 rebate about a month ago.

I should seriously go to newegg and price something out, see if I can afford it (because I certainly need it).

Hmm, I can hit $1k pretty easily it seems. I just did a quick run through, selected the CPU then newegg had a list of compatible hardware to choose from. Just a quick selection of stuff came out to $1,333 w/Vista and a really expensive video card. I'm sure doing more research I dont need a $500 video card, and might find a better deal on the 2GB of RAM.

I hate you all.  I paid a fuck of a lot more for the rig I've got going now, and while it still holds its own just fine... I'll be damned if I'm just in the wrong cycle.  It's been like this for a number of years now.  Every time I really, really need a new rig and can't put it off any longer, it seems like the wrong time to buy.  Then I end up feeling it later when price drops happen and I just paid more cash for stuff that's getting outdated even faster.

Eh, that kinda happened when I built my system. They introduced PCIE so there went my videocard upgrades, and then everyone went dual core which needed a new mobo so I was back to building from scratch again.

Yeah.  And I got my AMD dual core chip, which apparently was the wrong decision, because I'll need a new mobo for the popular options when I upgrade again.

I'm stuck with an old pre-PCIE system myself. AMD Athlon XP, DDR, AGP. Even if I had a bit of income, I doubt I would have the cash to build a whole new system.

$273 at MWave.com

Reseller ratings for MWave.com

I think I'm going to get it.  I was hoping my current Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 would fetch more on the eBay circuit, but it looks like used ones are only going for $50 - $80 on there.  Still though, that brings the additional cost down to around $200.  Not bad.

Que, I feel like that every time I upgrade. Of course, some cycles are worse than others, but you always feel left in the dust a year after you upgrade.

I really want to get a new gaming rig but I'm probably going to wait until I graduate in a year and get a job. Considering I'm broke. Plus I just turned 21 and not spending money on beer is difficult.

Well, I just installed my new Q6600.  My computer now has the ability to warp space and time.

In other news, installing a heatsink for a 120mm fan on an Intel-based system blows.  I thought for sure I'd break the motherboard's PCB pushing down on those pins like that.  The ginormous set of fins doesnt exactly make it easy either.

I've swear I've heard you say that exact thing for many other computer upgrades.

Yeah... heatsinks suck.  But this one is far worse than any other I've dealt with.  It's the second time I've had to install it in this PC and it was even less fun this time.

Sy actually took the plunge getting the heatsink on my current rig.  The thing fucking scared me to death it was so huge.  I mean, the one that came with the CPU was huge to begin with, and this other thing was then like twice the size.  I was grateful for his assistance.  I think I'd have just sat there staring at it for hours otherwise.

Well, sold my Core 2 Duo E6400 on eBay today for $130.  Not bad.  Basically the Q6600 was a $140 upgrade.

Wow they took their sweet time with the long rumored price drop heh.

I was considering the Q6600, but am going to hold off for now. The 9800GTX comes in December and I need to get some cash saved. Plus that and there are about 15 new games I want, and that will set me back around $750. :-( :-(
