[Project 52] Official 2007 thread! - Updated Feb 6: Transportation
« on: Sunday, December 31, 2006, 11:38:52 AM »
Here is how it's going to work: every week you must take a picture and post it online. To make it more challenging there will be a theme chosen for each week for you to go out and capture. I will update this post every week with the new theme, so be sure to check back!

This weeks theme: Transportation

When do you think we should post them?  Like a single "post day" or just whenever during the week?

So what do you think we should have for next weeks theme? Maybe just go with a color, like take a pic of something Blue? Or be generic and say landscape? Sunset? Plants?

Maybe each participating person could pick a theme each week, and we rotate who picks?

So Sunday is upon us, and we've got three people in (and didn't Ghandi say he wanted to do some too?  I can't remember).  So I guess it's about time to pick the theme for next week?  Who starts?

Tell you what, while we figure this out we can have this week be "Open"...take whatever you want.

I'm going to start this week. I brought my camera home with me but forgot the charger, and it was out of batteries. Just got back to school, though, and I'm charging it now.

Ok...we havent figured out our order yet.

Ghandi picked holiday for the first week.
I chose Open for week 2 while we figured this out (ha!)
So now its Que and Ant. Que posted his pic for last week before Ant, so lets just go with that.

The order then is:

Ghandi
idol
Que
Ant

So Que gets to pick next weeks theme.

Sounds like a plan to me.  I've already got a couple ideas.  I still need to take a picture for this week though, I'll probably go out tomorrow and do it.

I like to do pretty vague things that can be interpreted different ways... because that way people tend to take shots that differ more radically.  Hopefully this one wasn't too vague.  I think it should be okay, I have a bunch of ideas already.

Hints?  Uh... well, words.  The word as I was thinking of it implies something probably written by hand, but it doesn't have to.  Could be something script-like on a jar of jelly, billboard... whatever.  But use your imagination.  I mean, if you take "script" as in script-writing, you could take a picture of some actors and that wouldn't really be outside of the scope, or you could take pictures of something that happened in life that was so good you'd think it had been scripted beforehand... don't bother trying to stick ridiculously close to it.  Go as far off as you like.

Ok, I'm cheating a little this week. My cousin is coming into town so we can go to the Chicago Auto Show. I will be taking tons of pics, I'm sure one or 2 will turn out...heh.

Decided on a generic transportation theme since trains, planes, and rollerskates make good subjects. Plus it masks my selfishness a bit.

I was actually just thinking about how we just sort of stopped doing this, heh.  Is anybody even still up for continuing?  I think what happened to me was everybody got new cameras and I hate mine because it's 2MP.

Well, I was going to get a new camera and haven't yet. Mine is 1.3 MP. Yeah....plus freshman year it fell between my lazyboy and I didn't find it for 6 months and now it's mangled. It's in bad shape.

Should I say instead that I bought the camera when 2MP was standard, and the tech has just all-around improved since then, leaving my camera far in the dust with its lameness?  I don't know, maybe I just suck, but I can never get shots just the way I want them.

Umm... MPs are meaningless.

To a degree. They are vastly overrated, but having more MP does give you more flexibility in terms of cropping and a few other things. I actually read a really good article in the NYT awhile back talking about how little MP matters.

i know this was a point raised months ago, but i just have to chip in on the MP thing. MP ratings aren't meaningless at all, overvalued maybe, but if you do any kind of print work, it's important. look at a 5x7 print taken at 2mp, then a similar image at 4mp+. the difference in fidelity is very noticable.

however, if you're never going to print, and you're not bothered about cropping, then yeah - it doesn't really matter. i would also note that unless you're printing above 9x6, more than 4 or 5 megapixels is pretty redundant.

seeing all these mid to low end cameras come out with 10mp+ makes me a little bit angry though, as the lens is going to limit the quality of the image far before the amount of pixels. in cases like that, it's pure marketing bs, and companies such as fuji have fudged these numbers on purpose (a lot of their cameras used to use pixel interpolation, which does nothing but create a larger and less defined image), just so that it can be sold on the basis of higher tech specs.

I just got a new camera, a Sony DSC-W80, for my birthday, and it seems to take decent pictures so far. I'll post some soon. I'm also up for P52 now that my camera isn't horrible.

I'd really love to try this again next year.  I need a better camera, but aside from that, I need more time and to be more organized about the project.

Beo, my original post was mainly with regards to the new consumer cameras that offer 10mp+. It's all about the lens' resolving power and actual light control, for example flash control, something you can't really do much with simple point and shoot cameras.

Yes, mp does impact print sizes, but most people will rarely print beyond 10x10 inches and for that you don't need more than 6mp to start with. In those rare cases, Photoshop's interpolation can actually do a pretty good job.

For example, one of the more popular Nikon pro cameras is (still) the D2H (and the newer D2Hs). It's only 4.1mp! Yet coupled with a nice lens and in the hands of a pro, it can match virtually all current cameras in quality.

If you say you are seeing a fidelity changes between prints from different mp images then it's an issue with the camera's image processing than actual pixel dimensions, as actual image quality shouldn't be affected by the image resolution. I currently use a 6mp camera (to many people's surprise) and you will NOT see a difference in quality between 2, 4 and 6mp versions of an image if you view them at the same size (either resize to one resolution, or print to one final size).

Regarding Fuji: some of their cameras use a special sensor (I know the Pro S3, S5 cameras which use the SuperCCD sensor) that is basically 2 sensors in one. For example, the S5 has a "12mp" sensor, but in reality it's a 6mp camera. The advantage of the setup is that it produce images with a far better dynamic range (a really good thing), as half of the photo elements in the sensor are dedicated to the resolution, while the other half records extra image data. Some say that the S5 produces images that are closer to 8-10mp in actual apparent quality. It's a cool thing and so far, unique to Fuji.

Anyway, I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but you will be hard pressed to get "amazing" photos from a point and shoot, in particular indoors. The cameras are just too limiting, in particular when it comes to light control (flash). Good photos are done by moving the flash OF the camera, or having multiple flashes working together to light the subject. You simply don't have that option with most consumer cameras...

If anyone is interested, I can post some sample pictures that will show how moving the flash of camera can have a dramatic effect on image quality.
