Midway now freely offers the PC edition of The Suffering, Surreal Software's survival/horror game set in a penitentiary that is currently being adapted into a feature film. The free version of the [M]ature-rated game is supported by advertising, and the 1.3 GB download can be found on AtomicGamer, ComputerGames.ro, and Gamer's Hell.

It's quite a good game, actually.  It's a little thin at certain points, and there are some conceptual issues, but I think it actually manages to surprise you because of that.  You get the impression its a little run of the mill, but then it actually does some cool stuff.  I never did get around to trying the sequel, but if you can forgive a few flaws, the first one is actually quite a unique and cool little game.

I somehow managed to acquire that one back in its day.  It's installed on my system.  I can't remember much about it.  It must not have made a great impression on me.

I never got to the sequel, either -- which is a surprise. Though, the PC version of Suiffering 2: Ties That Binds does come w/ StarForce, if you can actually find it in retail stores.
(Though, I'll bet you it's been cracked, by now).

I found the original The Suffering (which didn't come with any StarForce) to be one of the better survival-horrors around. Quite a bit underrated, if you ask me.
