Crazy.

If you share your Items with your friends or post them on your web site, then you also must include the following notice about the Game Content. You can put it in a README file, or on the web page from where it’s downloaded, or anywhere else that makes sense so long as anyone who sees your Item will also find this notice.
MechWarrior: Living Legends was created under Microsoft’s “Game Content Usage Rules” using assets from the MechWarrior Intellectual Property, © Microsoft Corporation.

The part about revoking the deal at any time for any reason is still a little scary for them. Its understandable, but as a mod team spending tons of time on the project using assets owned by MS because they gave you the OK, and they can pull the rug out whenever they feel like it is kind of a freaky. But still cool MS said ok.

Though I suppose they got it because MS has no plans to do anything with MW again. The Halo RTS mod was foxed because they were making a Halo RTS themselves (for a controller. You know the hardcore RTS people would play the mod instead).

That's good for modders and good for Microsoft.

This makes Microsoft look like a good guy, letting the mod community make a mod based of some past beloved franchise they don't actually own.

I'd bet Microsoft is doing this b/c they don't know what the hell to actually do w/ the IP and not sure how to resurrect the license. Microsoft probably wants to see if gamers have an interest STILL in this actual IP. What better way than to test the waters by having a mod-making community make a mod for Crysis?

If the mod turns out to be really good and really popular, maybe Microsoft will contract someone to do another official Mechwarrior IP-based PC game. Maybe even contract the modders to do the next official MW game.

As long as the mod turns out well and the mod is popular, looks like a win-win situation, to me...

Nice. Good to see Microsoft easing up a bit.
