It's amazing how many people selling painted WH40k figures online can't
« on: Sunday, October 07, 2007, 10:56:03 AM »
paint worth a damn.  I've been looking for ideas on how to work the lightning claws on my marine Captain, and hence have been looking at a lot of photos at various places... and the people on ebay seem to be not much better than I am (and I'm not that amazing), or significantly worse.  I hope the people buying these figures intend to give them a nice bath in paint thinner and aren't lame enough to actually bring them to a game.

"Yeah, not only did I not paint these myself, I totally bought them from some guy who also can't paint!"

The only reason this is relevant is because several of these auctions were listed as "pro-painted" figures... and these guys couldn't be less pro if they just started randomly flinging paint at the models.

Well, there's a reason that a thread on painting strip appears on miniature painting painting forums about every other day. At least some of these pro-painters don't try to sell their figures for more than they would be if purchased new.

The really sad ones are the people who'll give something a tolerable paint job, but then try to sell it for as much as the dude who painting some award winning mini that probably took like 500 hours to paint.

Yeah, that's what I mean.  It's one thing if you painted a bunch of dudes and then just want to sell off your collection because you don't play anymore, but there's a bunch of guys trying to sell crap as though it were so awesomely painted, but the paint jobs are terrible.

Hehe that sounds a bit like some people in the art department when I was in University :P

I thought a big part of the joy was to paint the figurines yourself rather than buy them pre-painted.

I guess it's different for everyone.  The painting is the fun part for me at this point because we haven't yet started playing really... but I think some people just want to get figures on the table.  That seems like cheating to me, but to each his own.  And a lot of people probably buy big collections of painted minis and then strip them to repaint themselves, as has been suggested.  Not a bad idea, though I like assembling the guys too.  I want to do more work with minor conversions and additions going forward.
